You woke up in an unfamiliar room. "Ughh, my head," you said quietly. You sat up in a white bed and looked around, trying to figure out where you were. The walls were a bland white and an IV was hooked up to you. A heart monitor beeped to the rhythm of your heart. The door to the room opened and a man with a white, knee-length coat walked in.
"Hello, miss. You were hit by a car a few days ago. You have been unconscious since then. Can you tell me your name?" The man asked. "Where am I?" You asked him. "You're in the hospital, miss. Do you remember your name?" He asked again. "My name is y/n," you told the presumed doctor. "Great, do you have a last name?" You thought for a second, trying to remember what happened to you.
"y/l/n," you told the doctor. "Wonderful! Do you remember what happened, y/n?" He pried. You tried to think about it, and then it hit you. Am I in a different world? You shook your head no in response to the doctor's question. "I see. You were in a car accident, ma'am. Bystanders say that you appeared out of nowhere in front of a car."
You thought more about it, you could distinctly remember leaving your office and crossing the street. There's no way I appeared "out of nowhere," right? You thought to yourself. Maybe I did cross worlds!!
"I have one last question for you, y/n," the doctor said. "We took x-rays and found something quite unusual, we were wondering if you could explain it to us," the doctor said as he flipped through his clipboard, likely looking for the x-rays. He handed them to you, and at first, you weren't sure it was a human you were looking at. The bones seemed all out of place with extra ones behind your ribcage. "We also noticed two parallel scabs on your back, they look as if they've been reopened countless times," the doctor added.
Before you could respond, the door swung open. "Thank you, doctor. We'll take care of her from here," a voice said. You immediately recognized it. "Hello, miss. My name is Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D." Fury said as the door closed behind the doctor. Your heart leaped at the realization that you did, in fact, switch worlds. "...Nick Fury," you said under your breath. "I was interested in those x-rays of yours. I ran them by a few of my friends, and we all agree that you are not any ordinary person. Where are you from, y/n?" He asked. You thought for a second. There's no way there are going to be any records of me here. The voice said that I would be transported here, not reborn.
"I'm from Manhattan," you told him. "Right. Now would you like to explain these x-rays?" He prompted. You began to panic, recognizing that this is a huge chance for you to join the Avengers. I have to figure out what ability I have, like, right now. You thought to yourself. Your body tensed up. You recognized something abnormal almost instantly. You focused on that and muscles you didn't know you had in your back stretched. You felt weights extend outwards, tearing open your back. It hurt, but not unbearably. You realized what they were.
"...I have wings," you breathed. Fury looked at you in shock, though he would likely never admit it. "This definitely explains the extra bones..." He said, staring at the full 12-foot wingspan you had now fully extended. Your feathers were that of a hawk's, with mixes of browns, whites, and blacks. They were lighter than you would have thought, and you could move them with ease.
"Y/n, I think you should come with me," Fury said. He tossed you clothes, a loose gray tank top and a slightly darker gray hoodie with black jeans and black combat boots. "I can tell you chose these," you said matter-of-factly. Only after you said it did you realize it may have been premature and your stomach dropped. "Oh? Why do you say that?" Fury asked you. "W-well you're wearing all black, so I just kind of assumed.." you responded nervously. He chuckled. "Get dressed," He said and stepped out the door.
Fully dressed and ready to go, you opened the door and saw Fury standing beside it waiting for you. "Follow me," he said, leading you through the floor and into an elevator. You stood in the elevator in silence as it traveled down the multitude of floors. It didn't take long until the silence became awkward, and you looked at Fury. "What happened to your eye?" You asked. He stared straight ahead. "That is not relevant information," he responded cooly. He led you out of the building and towards a black SUV.
"Get in," he said to you. "Wow, am I being kidnapped?" you joked. He just looked at you and shook his head in disappointment. "You willingly came with me, y/n," he reminded you. You laughed, "it was a joke!"
After about a 20-minute drive you arrived at the Avengers compound you recognized from Captain America: Civil War. "What are we doing here?" You asked Fury from the backseat of the SUV. He looked at you in the mirror as he pulled up to the building. "We're going to see what Stark thinks of you," he responded. You tried to hide your excitement. I get to meet theTony Stark!! You thought to yourself. Climbing out of the vehicle, you followed Fury through the building. Soon, you were standing in front of the door to Tony's lab.
Fury opened the door and Tony looked up to see who could possibly be bothering him while he was working. He saw Fury and a girl he didn't recognize. "Who's this?" He asked. "She's a new potential asset, Stark. I want you to evaluate her," Fury said and left the room without waiting for a reply from Tony.
"So, what can you do, newbie?" Tony asked you. Your mind was flooding with countless thoughts and you almost didn't hear him. "Oh- I, I have wings..." you told him nervously. He practically scoffed at you. "Big deal, we got our own winged man," he said turning back to his desk. You realized your chance was slipping. You took off your hoodie and whipped your wings out, almost hitting the ceiling with the momentum from unfurling them. "No, I have wings," you said to him. He looked back at you and you saw his jaw almost hit the floor.
"Are.. are those attached to you?" He asked. You nodded and he got up from his desk and he walked over to you. He grabbed a wing and stroked it, feeling your soft feathers. "What's your wingspan? Can you fly? Where do you keep them? How do they work? Are you like a bird?" He rambled off question after question, clearly excited to see something so extravagant and new to him. You laughed a little, nervously. "One question at a time, Stark," you told him. "Right, right, of course." He laughed, looking your wings over. "This is incredible..." he almost whispered. "So what is your wingspan?" He asked, finally settling on a single question. "About 12 feet," you told him. But you couldn't remember how you knew that since you too only just discovered you had them.
"So can you fly?" Tony asked you, snapping you back from your thoughts. Can I fly? You asked yourself. What if I can't fly? I can't say that I can and then not be able to! What am I going to do...
