You woke to the sound of your favorite song playing as your alarm. You groaned and rolled over to turn it off. "Ugh, it's too early," you said to yourself. You took some time and got dressed, putting on a loose tank top and sweatpants for training. You walked out of your room and instead of Steve, you saw Bucky waiting for you. "Steve's on a mission. He asked me to take over your training in the meantime," Bucky said, answering your unspoken questions.
He led you down to the training room. "I'm not Steve, y/n, I'm not as in control of my strength as him," he told you, stepping into a fighting stance. "Good, I don't want you to go easy on me," you responded, matching his stance. He threw a punch and you ducked out of the way just in time. You lunged forward and aimed a punch at his stomach. He barely flinched and grabbed your waist, throwing you across the training room. You jumped up, ready for his next attack. He was walking toward you still, and you closed the distance quickly. You were running straight at him, but instead of barreling into him, you slid under his legs and pulled him into a chokehold. He grabbed your arms and slammed you to the ground. You grunted as the wind left your chest and rolled over, grabbing your stomach.
"Shit," Bucky whispered under his breath. "Are you okay?" he asked nervously. "Yeah- I'm great," you choked out, holding up your hand with a thumbs up. He picked you up and moved you to a bench. "I'm so sorry, y/n. I didn't mean to hurt you," he said after a minute. "It's okay, Bucky, really," you responded. His long brown hair covered his face and you brushed it back. "You can't hurt me," you told him. Immediately after realizing what you just said, you dropped your hand and turned away face flushing. Bucky didn't say anything but grabbed your arm, making you look back at him. He didn't give anything away with his brooding eyes but you could tell what he was thinking. You knew he was grateful for your words.
You were back in your room; Bucky insisted on walking you back. Warm water from the shower ran down your face. You sighed in relief as the water hit your new bruises, the tension seemed to release. After too long of a period in the shower, you got out and got dressed, heading downstairs to get some food. Waiting outside your door was none other than Bucky. "Feels like deja vu," you laughed. He chuckled a bit. "Hungry?" He asked. You nodded and followed him downstairs to the kitchen. The two of you sat down and had a quick meal.
It was around noon and it was only you and Bucky in the compound. Everyone else was either off-site or on the mission with Cap. "Buck, I'm bored," you complained, laying over the back of the couch. He stared at you for a minute. "We could spar again," he said. "I hope that was a joke, 'cause I don't know if you could handle any more of this," you retorted, flexing your biceps jokingly. He chuckled. "Yeah, I was kidding. We could watch a movie," he responded. You nodded, liking his idea. "What movie?" you asked. He only shrugged in response. "Okay, I'll pick," you muttered to yourself. I wonder what all kinds of movies they have here, you thought while opening Netflix. "Oh, sweet! Star Wars is on here," you exclaimed. "Have you seen any, Buck?" He shook his head. "Alright, then we'll start with The Phantom Menace, watch them chronologically." He nodded as you turned on the movie.
You were focused on the movie when you felt something drape over your shoulders. You turned to see that Bucky had his right arm around you. With the realization, your heart skipped a beat. What the hell, why'd my heart do that? I like Cap, not Bucky. You couldn't focus well on the movie after that, but you found yourself subconsciously leaning into Bucky.
Before you knew it, the credits were rolling and you and Bucky were still leaning into each other. "I'm hungry," you commented, getting up from the comfortable spot with him and stretching. "Do you want anything?" You asked. He shook his head 'no' and you went to get a protein bar from the cupboards. After quickly finishing the snack you wandered toward the door to the yard, hoping to get some more wing practice in. Outside, you let your wings unfurl quickly and lept into the air, catching yourself on the slight breeze with your feathers. You pumped your wings, climbing higher into the air. Soon, you were above the tree line and you gave a huge push, soaring straight up. You forced yourself higher and higher until your clothes became damp from the clouds. You inhaled a huge breath of the clean air and let yourself fall backward and plummet straight toward the ground. You pulled your wings tight against your body and dived to the ground, spreading them back out once you were back to the treeline and using the momentum to soar forwards. You did a backflip midair and as you lost momentum you let yourself lower back to the ground, landing hard. Your arms and wings flew out sideways as you tried to catch your balance on the re-entry, ultimately failing. You fell onto your butt and let yourself fall onto your back in the grass. Right above you was none other than Bucky.
"Impressive," he said, sitting down next to you. "Oh god, I'm sorry I totally ditched you!" You said in realization. "No it's okay I followed you out. You seem much more comfortable flying," he commented. "Yeah, it's an amazing feeling to be able to fly." He nodded. "How long have you had wings?" He asked. You thought for a minute, you can't tell him that you're from a different world so you don't know. But how long have you had these? The fact that you could slip them out so easily the first time meant that you must've used them before. This arose a new question, am I possessing the "me" in this reality? Your brain started going off the rails with all the possibilities of how everything is working. "Y/n." Bucky snapped you out of your thoughts. "Sorry, I got lost in thought. I guess I've had them as long as I can remember. They weren't from birth though, I know that. I just don't remember how I got them." you responded. He nodded. "I guess we're both weirdos, I've had this metal arm for 70 years," he said. Of course, you knew that already. You've seen all the Captain America movies. "That's a long time," you responded. God, that's the best answer you could come up with?
"Yeah, it's a long time," he responded. "Do you wish it never happened?" You asked. Before he could answer, you realized how horrible of a question that was. You sat up abruptly. "Sorry, that was really insensitive." "No, it's okay. Of course, I wish it never happened. I have a lot on my conscience. But if it hadn't happened, I would've had to live without Cap. I would never have met Sam, and I would never have met you." Something about how he said that last part made your stomach flutter. "You're right, like how if I hadn't gotten hit by a damn car I wouldn't be here right now," you added. "Exactly. We're all exactly where we're supposed to be, even if it feels wrong sometimes." It's as if he knew you weren't from here and knew you were worried about it, but the only person who knows is Thor and he swore not to tell anyone. "Odd," you said accidentally. "Hm?" He questioned. "Shit, sorry. I'm just thinking out loud I suppose." "Right. I'm heading back inside, y/n. Coming?" You nodded and tucked your wings back in your back. The two of you walked back inside. "Hey, Buck?" He turned to look at you in response. "I'm going to go take a nap, I'll see you in a bit," you told him and went toward your room. He nodded and watched you go.
Back in your room, you flopped on your bed and thought about everything that happened today. No matter how much you tried, you couldn't seem to get Bucky out of your head. You kept seeing his long brown hair and gorgeous blue eyes. His rippling muscles and intimidating poise that softens around the people he's comfortable with, his timid personality. You fell asleep soon and found that he even made it into your dreams.
