I wake up. It's my first morning at Hogwarts. The note from Malfoy is still clutched in my hand. I set it on the bedside table and get dressed. Ron is already in the Common Room when I walk down.
"Morning, Harry!" He says. "What class do you have first?"
I check my schedule, which magically appeared in my hand. "Um...Potions." I say.
Ron grimaces. "Me too, but we have that with the Slytherins."
I furrow my eyebrows, unsure why this is so bad, but I follow Ron to the great hall. I sigh. This Gryffindor-Slytherin rivalry is stupid. I see Malfoy's eyes flick in my direction. I look back at him. I don't wave, but I think he knows I saw him. Ron sits down next to Fred and George.
"Hey, Ronald!" Fred says. "How's your first day so far?" He asks.
"It's fine." Ron says.
I pile food onto my plate. Eggs, toast and pancakes; it's what I always have at home.
Later, Ron and I head to Potions. I sit at a table with him. Malfoy sits across from me. The teacher, Professor Snape, walks to the front. I get the feeling he doesn't like me much. He gives a short speech and flicks his wand to the board, telling us to make the potion. It's our first day, so I'm nervous. I add the ingredients, and I think I'm doing okay until Snape walks over.
"Potter." He says. "Did you even read the fifth line?"
I glance at it. I forgot to add an ingredient. "Sorry, Professor, I didn't read it right."
"A zero then, Potter." He flicks his wand at my potion and it disappears. "Please stopper your potions and bring them to the front. Thank you."
I scowl as I clean up. Why does Snape hate me?
Later, I sit with Ron in the common room.
"Why do you think Snape hates me so much?" I ask Ron, my feelings bursting out.
"I dunno." Ron shrugs.
I grumble. "Yeah, okay. Maybe I'll ask Moony and Padfoot."
I get a piece of parchment and begin to write to them:
Dear Moony and Padfoot,
My first day was great, except for one thing. The Potions professor, Snape hates me. Do you know why?
Well, I hope all is good with you.
Love,
Harry
I send it with a school owl who happened to be delivering a letter. I sigh. I sure hope they know. I turn back to Ron.
"Do you wanna play chess?" I ask.
Ron nods. "I'll get it." He runs up to our dorm. I sit and think. I hope it's not a bad reason.
Ron runs back down. "I got it!"
We play a match and then head to bed. After Ron falls asleep, I see an owl tapping on the window. Malfoy's owl. I smile and open the window and take the note.Potter,
I am glad you have decided to let us remain friends. I hope we can see each other soon. I have flying lessons with some Gryffindors tomorrow. Do you know if you are one of them?
Malfoy
I hurry and open a fresh piece of parchment.Malfoy,
I am one of them! Can't wait to see you.
Harry
I send the letter back with his owl. I'm glad I have another friend. Ron's great, but it's nice to have more than one. Ron doesn't know about Malfoy, though. I think he would disapprove. Malfoy doesn't like Ron much and Ron doesn't like him, so it's best to keep my friends seperate.
The next morning, I run to flying lessons early. Madam Hooch is teaching us. But, right before she blew the whistle, Neville Longbottom shot into the air, and fell on his wrist with a crunch.
"No one touch their brooms while I'm gone or you'll be expelled faster than you can say Quidditch." She walks away with Neville.
Neville dropped a small red orb on the ground. Malfoy picked it up.
"Oooo!" He says. "Look what Longbottom's dropped. I'll leave it somewhere for him to find it. Maybe in a tree." He gets on his broom and starts to fly.
"Malfoy, no!" I shout.
Malfoy's expression changes but he's 50 feet in the air. He drops it. I shoot onto my broom and catch it before it hits the ground. That was weirdly easy.
Then, Professor McGonagall bursts out.
"Potter!" She shouts. "Never in all my years...come with me."
She marches me into the school. I'm worried I'll get expelled. Moony and Padfoot will be so ashamed of me.
She pops her head in a classroom. "Can I borrow Wood?"
The teacher nods and a 5th year comes out.
"Wood, I've found you a seeker." She says. "He caught that thing in his hand from a 50 foot dive. What that your first time on a broom, Potter?" She asks.
I nod. "I mean, kind of. I've flown at ground level before."
She nods. "Well, here you go."
Wood is circling me. "He'll need a good broom, Professor."
"Of course." She says. "I'll see if Dumbledore can bend the first year rule."
She sends me back to class.
Later, at dinner, I tell Ron, and Fred and George come over to tell me how happy they are.
"You know that we are on the Quidditch team too, right?" Fred says.
I nod. "Beaters."
They nod. "Welcome to the team."
That night, I write Malfoy.
Malfoy,
I got on the Quidditch team because McGonagall saw me catch the thing you dropped. I'm the youngest Seeker in a century!
Harry
I send it with my owl, Merlin. I turn over. Well, it's been a great first few days. I fall asleep after a bit. Well, that's that. I'm on the Quidditch team now.
