THE BEGINNING

[ 19 BBY ]

Boom.

The heavy footfalls of battle droids echoed through the village.

Din was being clutched in his father's arms, pressed so tightly into his chest his ribs began to ache. His mother was crying, tears streaming down her cheeks, shouting aloud more to herself than anyone else, "Keep going! We have to keep going!"

Din was utterly confused. Why were there droids attacking his home? What did they do to deserve such a heartless massacre?

His thoughts were interrupted by the sight of a familiar man lying on the ground. Din reached out to him, unable to cry out or say a word at all from pure shock and anger and hurt.

How is this right?

Din's thought was interrupted yet again when his parents reached a cellar covered in weeds. His mother forcefully yanked open the doors, slamming them on the ground in a rush. She hugged her son, her only son, one last time, striving to memorize what his small body felt like. Her sweet, sweet boy she would never see again, since she knew the fate that awaited her. Din's father pressed his lips to his forehead, and then looked his son straight in the eyes. His face was strong, his expression confident for his boy, but his eyes betrayed his attempt at stoic demeanor. Din had no trouble detecting the fear in his father's eyes.

His parents hurriedly helped him down the cellar ladder, his mother repeating over and over, "I love you. My son, I love you."

Din sat down on the cold, hard floor, reaching out to his parents.

He didn't want to be alone.

Both of them paused for a brief second, the pain written across their faces mirroring Din's own. The metal doors to the cellar slammed shut, and that was the last Din ever saw of his parents.

Everything was still. Din was alone.

A boom rattled the doors of the cellar. Suddenly, they were thrown open, a battle droid staring straight at Din. He raised his arm, a blaster aimed directly at Din. He flinched, preparing himself for the burning pain, the inevitable end.

But it never came.

The droid was shot by an unseen force, crashing to the ground with a metallic clang. His rescuer stepped into view; it was a man clad head-to-toe in armor. Din, still in shock of all the events that came rolling after another, half-expected the man to shoot him too. Instead, he reached out a gloved hand to Din and beckoned him. Din was in awe of his savior, and he wasted no time in climbing up the ladder to the warrior's outstretched hand. He hoisted Din upon his hip, holding him close to his chest, just as the boy's mother and father had gripped him so tightly only moments before. Amid the chaos and the destruction, more warriors had entered the city, blasting the battle droids into oblivion before they could hurt any more townspeople. The man took off into the air, escaping from the ruined town.

The last thing Din remembered of that day was the sight of his best friend being held just as he was by a man Din had never seen before, boarding a ship and the hatch closing. His cheek burned from the few tears that fell from his eyes.

His city, his home.

His family.

His best friend.
