THE MANDALORIAN & THE RUNAWAY
☆
[ 9 ABY ]
"When do you think he'll be back?"
Rowan sipped her drink from behind her hood, pulling up her scarf when she finished. "Judging by when he left, I'd say in about--oh, let's give him two minutes."
Greef grinned. "Last time you were two minutes off."
"I don't intend to be wrong this time, Karga." Rowan tilted her head, her eyes crinkling at the corners, showing the barest trace of a smile under her mask.
The two waited, and sure enough, the Mandalorian arrived in nothing more, nothing less, than two minutes. He slid into the booth next to Rowan, close enough that their legs were flush against each other. Then again, the seating was only meant for one other person, anyway.
"Ha! Pay up, Greef." Rowan stuck her gloved hand out across the table, wiggling her fingers at the man.
"That was definitely planned," Greef muttered under his breath, reaching into his pocket to give Rowan the promised bet.
"All honesty here." She grinned under her scarf and turned the money over in her hands.
Greed turned his attention to the Mandalorian. "That was fast. Did you catch them all?"
Wordlessly, he tossed the tracking fobs on the table and crossed his arms. His knee jumped under the table, jostling Rowan's. She peered up at him, silently asking what was wrong, but he stared straight ahead.
"Good. I'll begin the off-load," Greef said, pulling the tracking fobs to his side of the table. He reached into his vest this time and laid credits for the bounty on the table.
"These are Imperial Credits," the Mandalorian said gruffly, his head tilting slightly to the side.
"They still spend."
"I don't know if you heard, but the Empire is gone."
Is it? Rowan thought, suppressing an eye-roll.
Greef sat back and held out his hands. "It's all I've got."
Immediately, the Mandalorian reached swiftly for the tracking fobs. Greef blocked his hand, saying, "Save the theatrics. Fine, I'll..."
Greef reached into his pocket yet again, muttering something about bounty hunters being more expensive than---"I can do Calamari Flan. But I can only pay half."
"Fine," the Mandalorian said flatly, taking the credits.
Greef cut his eyes to Rowan, shifting them upward in a slight eye-roll. With every word, he placed a puck on the table. "Hmm. I have a bail jumper, a bail jumper, another bail jumper, a wanted smuggler--"
The Mandalorian reached for the pucks, his large hands closing around the lot. "We'll take them all."
"Nah, hold on. There are other members of the Guild, and this is all I have."
This was a surprise to both of them. "Why so slow?" Rowan asked, cutting into their conversation.
"It's not slow at all. Actually, very busy." Greef sighed, seemingly exasperated with the situation. "They just don't want to pay Guild rates. They don't mind if things get sloppy."
