“Are you Aaron?” The man looked up at me and smiled before standing.
“I am. You must be Y/n,” He said, extending a hand to me. I slipped mine in his and shook it with a nod. “Oh, let me get your chair,” He said, quickly pulling my chair out for me and made me laugh and blush a little.
“Thank you. I can see you take first impressions well,” I said. He grinned at me as he sat across from me. Aaron had black hair, bright hazel eyes, and a chiseled jawline. He looked around my age, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t attracted to him.
“First impressions are everything,” He said, winking at me. “You look very nice.”
“Oh, thank you,” I said, feeling my cheeks heat up. It was very easy to make me flustered. But this wasn’t a date. “So what can you tell me about Joseph?”
“Right,” He said, smiling a little disappointedly. He dug into the bag placed beside him and pulled out a pad of notes. “Let’s see...Joseph Joestar, here he is. He’s 19, and he lives with his newly-wed wife, Suzie Q here in New York. His great-grandfather, George Joestar I, was your great-grandmother’s brother. Your grandmother and his grandfather were born a year apart. Your great-grandmother, Dorthy, passed a week before George I, who was murdered. Jonathan, his son, died soon after in a boat crash, just three days after your grandmother. Joseph's mother turned out to be the baby his grandmother saved from the crash, who then conceived with George II, Joseph’s father, and had Joseph. However, she disappeared soon after and George II passed due to unknown causes. Joseph and Erina, his grandmother went over the will’s, I guess for old times sake, and found your family name at the bottom. He called me and then I called you.”
“Oh, that’s...confusing,” I laughed lightly, shaking my head. “So Joseph and I are...distant cousins?”
“Yeah, basically,” He said, making us both laugh. “But, of course, I have to make sure you are actually related and not just the same last name.”
“How will you do that? A blood test?” I asked, shuddering at the thought of a long needle.
“No, actually there’s a different way. He said that every Joestar bloodline has one. A star-shaped birthmark on the back of their neck and shoulder.” He said.
“Oh, you mean this?” I asked, moving my hair to the side and slightly pulled the strap of my dress down to show him.
“That’s all I needed to see,” He smiled. “Congratulations Y/n. You just inherited twenty-thousand dollars.”
“Twenty-thou-” I cut myself off and covered my mouth in shock. $20,000! How in the world did I inherit that much money?! I didn’t even know them! I felt so bad! I didn’t even know that side of the family and they were giving me twenty thousand dollars!
“You alright there?” Aaron asked.
“Y-yeah! No, I don’t know. I feel so bad taking that kind of money. I make seventy-five cents every hour. I hardly make a thousand every year! That’s thirteen...almost fourteen times what I make! I don’t even know them!” I exclaimed.
“Well, you could always meet them,” Aaron shrugged. “Joseph lives in Brooklyn.”
“That’s not that far away,” I said. “Do you have a way I can contact him?”
“I have a number and an address,” He said, tearing off a strip of paper before handing it to me.
“Thank you, so much!” I said, folding it and slipping it into my purse, making a mental note to remind myself to remember it was there.
After dinner, I returned back to my dad’s house to spend some time with him and my brother. When I walked inside, my dad and my brother were sitting in front of the radio, both of them listening intently to the station. I recognized the announcer’s voice from the Kentucky Horse Derby and rolled my eyes. Of course, they would be listening to it at this time. I shed my coat and tossed it on the rack before kicking off my shoes.
“And Gallahadion crosses the line first! He’s won the race!”
“NO!” Daniel cried, falling onto his back as he covered his face with his hands.
“YES!” My dad cheered, shooting to his feet and pumped his fists into the air.
I watched in amusement as my dad held his hand out to my brother, who then grumbled and reached into his pocket and slapped two dollars into his hands. Daniel sat up with a pout, still grumbling to himself and my dad pocketed the money.
“Thank you,” He sung.
“Shut up,” Daniel said, standing up. “Can I have a beer?”
“No, it’s a school night,” I said, grinning at him over my shoulder. He flicked my nose as he passed into the kitchen, making me loop my arm around his neck and bring him down into a headlock.
“Hey!” He barked as I rubbed my knuckles across his head before letting him go. “Come ‘ere,” I laughed and ducked under his arm, dashing towards the living room where I hid behind my dad.
“Ha!” I said, sticking my tongue out at him as my dad chuckled and kissed my forehead.
“Have you eaten?” My dad asked, dismissing Daniel away with a simple hand over his face.
“Yeah, I had dinner with someone,” I replied, hopping on the couch.
“Oh? With who? A boyfriend?” Daniel asked, jumping over the back of the couch to sit beside me. My dad sat on the other side, leaving me in the middle. I looked between them and rolled my eyes.
“No, not a boyfriend,” I said. “It was for work.”
I had considered telling my dad and brother about Joseph and the inheritance, but I decided against it. I was obviously going to split it with them, that was for sure, but until I actually met Joseph and started learning more about that side of the family, I thought it would be better to wait. I had already had it planned that I would introduce Daniel first, then my dad. I did this because I think it would be better to give my dad some time. I was still iffy about it myself. I really didn’t know how to react.
“Is that so?” Daniel asked, leaning forward as he raised his eyebrows. “What kind of work?”
I slapped him on the back of his head. “Business, you idiot. I had a lead for an article.”
“Jeez, you didn’t have to hit so damn hard,” He muttered, rubbing the spot.
“And you don’t have to be so nosey,” I said. “I’m twenty-one and have a job and bills the last time I checked.”
“I think you need to check again,” He said, tapping the side of my head. “I don't think your brain is big enough to comprehend all that.”
“Oh, you-”
“Ladies, ladies, you’re both beautiful,” My dad chuckled, separating us. “Now instead of fighting, how about we play some cards?”
