“Dad!” I yelled, making him spin at the sound of my voice. I jumped out of the car and ran towards him.
“Y/n?” He asked, taking me into his embrace. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m your back up,” I smiled, tapping the holster on my thigh. I then turned to the other agents. “What’s going on?”
“We got ambushed by a group of rogues,” One of them said. “They’ve backed up for now, but they’re still coming.”
“It’s daytime,” I mumbled. “How are they moving?”
“We don’t know,” The other replied. “But, they’re moving so fast, it’s almost like they can’t be hurt by the sun.”
“No, they are,” I said. “They’re moving fast enough to attack, then slinking back to the shadows to let their wounds heal. It’s more than likely what they’re doing now. Let’s get going. Get him into the car first.”
“Yes ma’am,”
“Wait a second,” My dad said, watching as I pulled my knife out. “Y/n what are you doing?”
“Covering,” I replied, holding it up as I got into a defensive position. “I’m the only one with a neck brace, so you all need to get in the car before I do.”
“But-”
“Go! Here they come!” I yelled, watching the shadows shift around. I glanced back to see the agents pulling my father into the back seat. I tightened my grip on my blade and waited. If they were attacking during the day, then it was pure suicide to them. Were these part of Aaron’s group, or were they just a bunch of punks who wanted to stir up trouble? I tried to remember what Vex told me.
“Most vampires can move without a sound, but those guys Holt have are nothing like that. Listen closely. You’re an observant person, so use those skills. What can you hear, and what can’t you? Silence is not a good sign. There will always be some kind of sound. With vampires, it’s not like you cant listen for their breathing, so you have to listen for everything else. The rustling of their clothes. Their shoes on the ground. Their steps. “
I looked over to the side, narrowing my eyes at the sound of something crunching. Sounded like gravel under shoes. So they were in the alleyway. How many? I couldn’t tell. It was more than one, that was for sure.
“Next is the smell. Vampires usually have a distinct scent of blood. You work in a hospital, so you know what that smells like. Whenever they are about to strike, it will come to your senses. Pinpoint exactly where the smell is coming from, then attack from the opposite direction.”
A putrid scent filled my senses, making me crinkle my nose. It was faint, but I could smell it getting closer.
“Time everything well. If you strike too soon, they’ll know and evade your attacks. They’ll then know your movements and counteract them. If that happens, then you’re dead.”
I felt a breeze go by my left side and released a steady breath. I spun around, driving my knife into one of the vampire’s neck. Hamon shot through his body, rushing through his veins before he crumbled to the concrete. I dropped low, watching the leg swing over the top of my head before turning and grabbing the second by his ankle. Hamon washed over his body, and he didn’t even have time to scream before he was falling down in ashes.
“Y/n! Watch out!” I heard my dad yell. I quickly snapped my head to the side after hearing rushed footsteps. I jumped to the side, slashing my blade across the next one’s thigh, making him fall. He screamed in agony as the sun’s rays beat down on him.
“That’s all of them! Get in the car!” The agents yelled. I ran towards the car, quickly getting in the back with my dad, and slammed the door shut.
…
“So you actually did it,” Vex said as I opened the door. “Surprised you didn’t die out there.”
“Those weren’t Aaron’s guys,” I said, allowing my father to walk in behind me.
“What makes you think that?” Speedwagon asked.
“Too easy,” I mumbled, crossing my arms over my chest. “It’s like they weren’t even trying.”
“You think it has anything to do with Aaron?” Joseph asked, tapping a pencil on the table.
“If it is, then he’s weeding out his guys,” Caesar said.
“They were inexperienced, and you could tell,” I said, leaning over the table with a sigh. “They didn’t have anything to do with this.”
“Newbies who thought they could pick on some unsuspecting people,” Vex said. “Not that uncommon. Vampires do it all the time.”
“Dad?”
We all turned to see Daniel in the doorway, looking at our father with wide eyes. He took a step forward, furrowing his eyebrows together. “What the hell are you doing here?”
“I had him brought here, so Aaron couldn’t hurt him,” Caesar said.
“Who are you to decide that?” Daniel growled, tightening his jaw.
“He was in more danger there,” I said, turning to my brother. “I’d rather he be here than at home.”
“Shut up,” He snapped.
“Daniel that’s enough!” My father yelled, standing up. Daniel immediately backed down. “I’ve heard enough from the both of your bickering. Daniel, you need to understand that your sister is doing what she can. This is hard on her as much as it is you and I. Y/n, you need to see that your brother is worried about you. Both of you are so bullheaded that you can’t see each other’s point of view. Stop acting irrational. You’re brother and sister, not enemies.”
“Sorry, Dad,” Both of us mumbled. He placed a hand on the top of both of our heads.
“I know both of you are caught up in something that I have no control over. Hell, I don’t even understand half of the shit that’s going on. But I do know that both of you are incredibly strong,” He moved his hand from our heads to our shoulders, his hand over the star-shaped birthmark placed there. “This mark proves it.”
“You guys done now?” Vex asked, earning a short glare from Speedwagon. “We have work to do.”
“Let them have this moment,” Joseph muttered. “They should enjoy it while they can,”
Vex nodded as my father brought us into his arms.
“God knows it will only get worse from here.”
