I laid on my side on the couch, head resting on Gene's lap. He absentmindedly rubbed my back as I kept my arms around my stomach, shifting with a groan as the babies kicked hard. Another mild contraction washed over me and I let out a sigh, wincing and shifting more to try and get comfortable, with little success.
"What's wrong love?" Gene asked, long fingers giving me a soothing massage.
"I'm scared for labor. I don't want to have to go through all that pain," I murmured.
He let out a sigh, leaning over and kissing me on the forehead. "I know. I wish you didn't have to, I wish I could feel the pain for you. But just think, once it's over we'll have two happy healthy babies and we'll be a happy, healthy family!" he said. "And I promise I won't leave your side the whole time."
I smiled up at him. I reached up and played a bit with his hair. He smiled back, taking my hand and giving it a squeeze. The babies kicked again, even harder, and I let out a hiss of pain.
"What's wrong?" he asked, worried look on his face. "Is it time?"
"Not yet. They're just kicking me," I said.
He nodded, going back to rubbing my back as I went back to resting my head on his lap. "Whenever it's time, just let me know. Everything's ready, we've got both the overnight bags packed and the carseats are in the car and everything."
I rolled onto my back, groaning, and put my hands on my stomach, almost wishing the babies would hurry up. "Thanks love. I don't know how I'd do this without you."
He gave me another kiss. "Y/N I am so, so glad that you found me, I'm so glad that you were able to tell me that I had gotten you pregnant and I was going to be a father. I want to be a father, I want to love our children and raise them and love you and spend the rest of my life with you," he said, putting a hand on my baby bump.
"I'm very glad I found you too. I love you, and I want our kids to know their father! And I don't know how I would've raised twins on my own," I said with a giggle.
"Well you won't have to. I don't...I don't really know how to be a father, I've never done it before, but dammit Y/N I'm gonna be the best father and the best partner," he mumbled, face going pink.
My heart melted and I blew him a kiss. "And I want to be the best mother and the best partner. I haven't done this either! But we're together and that's all we need."
He nodded, taking my hand and giving it a squeeze. We fell back into a content silence. I tried to get as comfortable as I could, shifting around with a grunt as the babies kept kicking. All of a sudden, the babies erupted into a flurry of sharp kicks, mild contraction getting stronger and more painful, and my legs grew wet. I sat up with a gasp.
"Gene my water broke!" I cried.
His eyes widened and he scrambled to his feet. "Oh shit. Okay let's go then. It'll be fine I promise," he said, kissing me on the forehead and helping me to my feet.
I waddled to the car, excited and terrified, contractions getting stronger. "You're able to make it to the hospital, right?" he asked anxiously.
I laughed in spite of myself. "Yes! Don't worry, we have time," I said.
Nodding, he got in the car after helping me buckle his seatbelt, driving to the hospital as fast as he was able without breaking the law. The instant we got there, he bundled me inside, one arm around my waist and the other on my shoulder.
In no time at all we were in a delivery room and I was lying propped up in the bed. I had changed into a hospital gown. Gene was next to me, holding my hand tightly.
"I think you're more nervous than I am," I teased. His face went red and he shrugged. "Sorry. I just want it to all go smoothly! And I hate seeing people I care about in pain. Ace makes me so nervous, I'm always afraid he'll get drunk and hurt himself," he mumbled.
"You're such a sweetheart, you know--" I couldn't finish my sentence as a wave of pain washed through me from a sharp contraction.
I gripped his hand, letting out a cry of pain. "It's okay love, just breath, it'll be fine!" Gene said.
Panting, I nodded, loosening my deathgrip on his hand. He smiled, kissing me on the forehead. "Easy with the hands babe, those are the moneymakers after all. Can't imagine Paul would be too happy if I told him I can't play bass since you broke my hands," he teased.
In spite of myself, I laughed. "I'll try not to," I said.
Labor dragged on for hours, with each contraction only getting more painful. Gene was a total dear, standing by my side and murmuring encouragement to me as I clutched his hand. "Deep breaths babe, deep breaths! Just push!" he said.
With a scream, I dug my nails into his skin, forcing out the first baby. A shrill cry echoed through the room as the nurses took care of our son but I couldn't focus on him just yet. "Come on love, halfway there. Just one more, you can do it!" Gene said.
A few minutes later I had birthed the second baby, our daughter, and the pain of birth was all forgotten as I held our babies in my arms for the first time.
