A New Family

Still out of breath and still aching a bit, I laid on a fresh bed in a new private room, where Gene was the only other person in the room beside me and our babies. We weren't saying much. I was lying in bed with the babies while Gene was sitting in a chair beside my bed. Despite the fact there weren't many words being said, I could still feel just how much he loved me.

"So what do we want to name our son and our daughter?" I asked, giving Gene a smile as I held our newborn babies, supporting them in a crook of each of arm as I breastfed them.

He smiled back, giving me a kiss. "You know, I actually had a more important question to ask you," he said.

Confused, I raised an eyebrow. "Oh, you did? What is it?"

Smile growing, he dropped to one knee, pulling a box out of his pocket and opening it, a diamond ring sparkling in the fluorescent hospital lights. "Y/N, will you marry me?" he asked.

Eyes wide, my mouth dropped open, happy tears starting to roll down my cheeks. "Oh, Gene! Yes!" I cried.

With a laugh, he rose to his feet, slipping the ring on my finger and giving me a kiss, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear before taking our daughter, cradling her as I kept nursing our son. "You know, one crazy night worked out pretty well in the end," he said softly.

"It did," I murmured, kissing him back and hugging our son to my chest. "It really did."

We sat in a warm silence for awhile, holding hands while we each held one of our children. At last, I broke the silence. "We do need to name the babies though," I said with a smile.

"Oh! Oh right, right. Well um...what did we want to name them? I like the name Jackson, if you don't mind it," he said sheepishly, face going pink.

"I love Jackson! Maybe Jackson Lee Simmons? We can call him Jack for short?" I suggested, looking down at our son who was still happily suckling on my breast.

"I think that's perfect," he said, before smiling at our daughter. "And how about for our beautiful little baby girl?" he murmured.

"I was thinking of Evelyn Harley Simmons. We could call her Eve or Evie for short!"

A very fond smile spread across Gene's face and he nodded, smoothing a lock of curly black hair out of Evie's eyes. "I like that," he said softly.

With a sigh, he rose to his feet, handing the little bundle that was our daughter back to me. "Alright love, I need to go sign the birth certificates and get that taken care of. I'll be back," he said, planting a kiss on my forehead.

My heart sank and I shifted to allow Evie to latch on to nurse. "Make it quick," I murmured.

A soft smile spread across his face and he brushed a hand through my hair, getting lost in my eyes. "I won't be long. I don't want to be apart from you and our babies any longer than I have to," he said, kissing me on the lips.

I kissed him back before watching with a sigh as he walked out of the room with a parting wave. I loved him, more than I loved anyone, except for the babies in my arms. "I love you," I cooed, looking at my sleeping children. "You're the sweetest surprises I could ask for."

I sat propped up on the bed, cradling my children and waiting for my future husband to return. He walked back in a moment later, taking Jackson from my arms and holding him against his chest, giving me a kiss.

"I love you," he cooed, brushing the faint locks of Jackson's hair to the side. Jackson had gotten my straight black hair while Evie had Gene's curly black hair. "I love you, I love Evie, and I love Y/N," he murmured, looking up and me and giving me a smile.

I returned the smile, holding Evie against my chest to make sure she got the needed skin-to-skin contact while Gene did the same with Jackson. "I love you. I'm so, so glad this all happened. And I'm so glad that you love me enough to marry me."

He chuckled, taking my hand and squeezing it. He ran a thumb over my engagement ring. "Y/N, I love you more than that. If there was anything higher than marriage I'd be asking you to do that. I want to be with you from now until the end of time. I'm going to stay with you and I'm going to love you and I'm going to raise our kids with you, whether we're raising two kids or more," he said with a wink.

I blushed, giving him a kiss. "Well, we'll just have to see what happens, won't we?" I asked. "We shall," he said in agreement. "We most definitely shall."
