CHAPTER 16

POSTED 1/15/21

"Are you still not talking to my brother?"

"No."

"Will you ever?"

"Nope."

Lucy stared hopelessly at Mary who was in the middle of braiding Gael's hair in their shared cabin. Another day had gone by and Mary and Edmund still hadn't made up with one another. They were too stubborn to do so — especially Edmund, which Lucy knew all too well. Although he was much more mature now that he was older, it still took quite a bit for him to swallow his pride, own up to his mistakes, and apologize.

Mary was quite similar in that aspect, but admittedly, she was so close to forgiving Edmund even without a proper apology. Sometimes, she would catch herself wanting to walk right up to him to tell him to forget their fight and bury the hatchet already. However, whenever she remembered how much he had accused her for a lot of things — even going so far as to imply that she would cheat on him — she'd stop and go back to ignoring him.

"I'm not saying he was correct," said Lucy. "But he was just acting out of jealousy, you know? He didn't realize — actually, I didn't know, either — that someone who once liked you romantically was on this voyage, too. I bet he just wishes you had told him earlier."

Mary kept her mouth shut, attempting to focus all her attention on finishing the braid on Gael's brown hair.

"And then he just got defensive about the army because he's been wanting to join it for so long, so he just exploded like that when you brought it up."

"It's not my problem that he can't manage his emotions," Mary said stubbornly. "He should learn how to speak like a sane person instead of simply shouting nonsense if he feels a certain way."

"But I heard you yelling at him, too," Gael said innocently. Lucy had to stop herself from snorting as Mary spluttered for a response.

"N-No way, I was completely calm and collected!" Mary insisted, but she couldn't deny that she had lost her cool that time as well.

"Please, I just know that if you talk to him, he'll realize he was wrong and come crawling back to you," Lucy tried again, crossing the room to come closer to Mary as if to emphasize her point.

"Why should I talk to him first?"

"Because... well..."

"Exactly."

"Mary," Lucy whined. "I can't stand seeing the two of you fight."

"Then sit," said Mary in an unbothered tone as she tied the ends of Gael's hair. Lucy sent her a small glare at that. "There you go. All done."

"Thank you, Mary," Gael smiled at her.

"You're welcome."

Lucy sighed dramatically, making Mary turn away from Gael and face her once again.

"Yes, Lucy?"

"Come on, you know how Edmund is. He just overreacted because he cares about you." Mary softened at that, but she did her best to stand her ground.

"Shouldn't you be trying to knock some sense into Edmund instead?" Gael wondered. Both Mary and Lucy were mildly taken aback, not expecting her to actually give some worthwhile insight into their conversation. After a brief pause, Mary let out an amused laugh.

"Gael here is speaking facts," she said with a smug look.

"Alright, she has a point," Lucy gave in. "To be honest, Caspian's been trying to do that, but I have no idea how it's going."
