CHAPTER 10

POSTED 8/21/20

A/N: Just a heads up in case it confuses you later on — this chapter's a mixture of dialogue and scenes from both the book and movie!

Mary, Edmund, Lucy, and Caspian all dried up and got changed into clean clothes after that unexpected turn of events. Mary lent Lucy some of her spare clothes, which thankfully fit her even though the younger girl had grown taller than her, while Caspian did the same for Edmund. The girls freshened up in Mary's quarters while the boys were in Caspian's. They all agreed to meet at the Stern Cabin once they had finished so that they could discuss some important matters regarding their voyage.

"I'll wait for you outside, Lucy," Mary said. Lucy continued getting dressed while Mary exited her room, only to come face to face with Edmund as if he was about to enter. He was now clad in a grayish lavender polo, a pair of tan pants, and a matching set of a brown leather vest and boots.

"Before you say anything, I was just about to knock. I wasn't going to barge in like last time," Edmund said with a smirk. Mary glared at him but felt her cheeks flush. That incident when he had walked in while she was trying on gowns for her coronation day was still fresh in her mind. It happened a year ago — almost three, if they were going by how much time had passed in Narnia — but she still got embarrassed thinking about it.

"Congrats, you have manners now," she said sarcastically, making Edmund shrug shamelessly.

"So, when did you get here in the first place? And how?" he then asked curiously.

"It was the strangest thing, actually. I was in the train, reading my book — you know, the one about Greek and Roman Mythology — when water started spilling from the cover. It was crazy," Mary rambled, recalling how confused she was back then. "The entire carriage just filled up with water, so I just kept swimming until I reached the surface, and then I was in Narnia."

"A similar thing happened to me and Lucy — oh, and Eustace. It came from a painting, though," Edmund explained, briefly wondering how Lucy's bedroom at the Scrubb's house looked like at the moment. "Does this mean you wound up in the sea, too?"

"Nope, it was the Great River. Much less scary than the ocean, and some water nymphs even helped me out," Mary said teasingly as if she was bragging that her arrival was better. "That was around two months ago already. Reepicheep and Trumpkin found me and brought me back to Cair Paravel."

"I wish I could see how it looks now."

"I wish you could, too. I'm sure it's nothing compared to the original, but it's beautiful nonetheless."

"That's good to hear," Edmund smiled sincerely. "Do you have any idea why exactly we're here, though?"

"Honestly, even I'm not sure," Mary confessed. "When I arrived, things were great in Narnia. New alliances, no conflicts, and —"

The door to Mary's quarters swung open, the sound coming from it cutting the conversation short. Lucy stood by the doorframe and looked at the couple expectantly.

"Shall we meet up with Caspian now?" she said to which Mary nodded at.

"Let's go, then. We'll explain everything else there."

Edmund slipped his hand into Mary's hand. Then, Mary led him and Lucy through the ship she had grown very familiar with. They only needed to walk a few more paces until they reached the Stern Cabin, which served as a connection and meeting venue between Caspian and Mary's quarters. She unlocked the double doors and pushed them wide open, entering with the Pevensie siblings closely following after her. Caspian was already in the cabin, waiting for them in front of the large table.
