CHAPTER 19
POSTED 3/27/21
What had started as rainfall on that one, cloudy day swiftly turned into a persistent storm. It wreaked havoc on the Dawn Treader for days on end, and with the troubled waters and hazy view, it was difficult for them to find any land in which they could wait out the storm. They had no choice but to try and keep moving forward. Everyone struggled to stay afloat, both figuratively and literally.
These conditions were a sharp contrast to Mary and Edmund's rekindled relationship. It was ironic how the couple had finally just made up after all that time being caught up in a row, but it seemed that the seas felt that nothing good should last forever, so they decided to put everyone else through this misfortune.
"When do you think this will stop?" Mary wondered aloud, looking out through the window of her cabin — though all she could see was grey.
"I honestly don't know," Edmund replied, his voice reverberating like a muffled, deep sound from where Mary was lying down nearly atop him. "But I'm getting quite worried. It doesn't look like it has plans on stopping any time soon."
"Speaking of which, we should meet with Caspian and Drinian already. We probably need to settle on our next course of action now."
Mary lifted her head off of Edmund's chest and pushed herself up. This caused Edmund to groan dejectedly, for the two of them had just been comfortably lying in bed together for the past half hour. Mary had to admit that she wished she could stay with him like that longer. Now that they had forgiven one another, being around Edmund was one of Mary's only sources of comfort left in that trip. After all, the atmosphere inside the ship was burdened with gloominess and stress due to the storm. Of course, there was still Reepicheep, the ever-motivational and brave mouse. He had been trying to encourage everyone on board to stay hopeful by spouting some wise words about how the glass is always half-full — it was helpful at the beginning, but it clearly didn't do much to lift the mood seeing as everyone was still quite miserable.
However, there were a few things stopping Mary and Edmund from lazily staying in that twin-sized bed of her cabin any longer. For one, Caspian had called for that meeting, so they had to leave in a while anyway. Second, Lucy and Gael would probably be heading back into the room any time now, having only left the couple alone in the first place because they had gotten lunch at the dining hall.
"Can't we lay here for one more minute? It's so comfy," Edmund said, refusing to unwrap his arms from around Mary.
"We've got a job to do, remember?" she reminded, tugging on his arm to pull him up. Edmund grumbled but obliged, moving up to a sitting position as well.
"Easy for you to say. You and Lucy get to sleep in this cabin while I'm stuck with Eustace for a roommate," Edmund whined. "Why do I always end up with him?"
"Don't ask me. I'm not the one who dragged him into Narnia through a painting," Mary teased, causing Edmund to fume almost comedically.
"It's not like I willingly brought him here!"
