"Waffles or pancakes?"

"For breakfast? Waffles always." She laughed, grabbing a fork.

"Seriously? But I don't know know how to heat them.." The boy froze at the fridge, staring at the food inside.

She watched his figure from behind, how he hesitated to grab anything. "So your saying you know how to make pancakes instead?"

"... let's just order something."

"Clay I told you, if you don't take care of that cat your moving back home!"

"Mom, you don't understand okay? She only eats once I have so Ill feed her later-" Dream sighed through his phone, watching as Patches stared at her food before back at him. "I know how to look after my own cat."

"Ahh I know I know, I just miss you guys." She took a long breath in, and Dream took the opportunity to put the phone down and on speaker so he could start on some chores. "Your coming over next week still, right? Like you promised?"

"Ah shit!" The bag he was using to empty his bin burst and week old ready meals shot over the kitchen floor. "Erm, I don't think I can. There's this new tournament thing that everyone's hyping up, and they asked me to play in. It happens once a month-"

"Nono it's fine. Your busy, I get it." Suddenly the boy felt bad for not going. It had been months since he had been back to the house, ever since he stormed out at the start of the year with Patches in one hand and a backpack stuffed with clothes in the other.

"I promise you I'll come before Christmas, th-that's all I can say right now." He dropped the broken bag in defeat and glanced to the door. "I'm just trying to support myself, Yano?"

This mother never really got the whole gaming thing, which was fine. It was his dad that was the problem... and all the school he skipped. "You wouldn't have to pay for your own rent if you came ho-"

"I'm not coming back mom."

"But the girls miss you! I'm sure we could figure things out a-"

"Mom." Dream grabbed his keys and strutted to the front door, a small flame of anger growing inside. "This is what i do now, this is what I like. I make more money a week than both of you in a year. I don't need help. I-" he caught sight of his new neighbour returning home through the side window. "I need to be happy."

"Clay I didn't mean-"

"Sorry, I really have to go; something came up. Tell the girls I said hi" He unlocked the door, leaving his phone on the side. "...love you."

...

"Love me? H-he loves me?" Layla stumbled back in her chair, the weight of the world pressing down in her lungs. "Wh-what? Your joking right?"

Alice laughed cautiously through the phone line, audibly taking it off speaker now she wasn't driving anymore. "It's true. He has for a while, but he told me last night and I just couldn't keep it from you."

Layla felt stunned. "You broke his promise? Alice, that's not good-"

"Oh shut up. Would you rather you found out from me or on your date next week?" Alice paused, "you did know it was a date right?"
