Chapter Thirteen: Do Your Best For The Test
We called Dr. Xeon from the phone in the kitchen with the number she gave us to contact her with. We dialed, but she didn’t answer. So we decided to call her emergency number. She gave us strict instructions not to ever call this number unless it is an actual emergency. Even though this wasn’t really an ‘emergency’, we decided to screw around with her anyways. She did destroy most of the inhabitants in this world so the least thing we could do is annoy her with frivolous phone calls. She answered on the first ring:
“What’s wrong?” Dr. Xeon answered as she picked up her phone, Aaron was the one holding the phone, but we could all hear, so we lounged around the kitchen, our new living room.
“Where are they taking the dog?!” he yelled into the phone. We could hear her sigh on the other side of the phone.
“Aaron, am I right? I told you not to call this number unless it’s an absolute emergency.” She said tiredly.
“This is! Please just tell me so we know where to go to watch them put her down. We at least deserve that.” He cried, his voice breaking. He was a good actor. Or was he acting? I never thought Aaron would be the sensitive type.
“They aren’t putting her down per se, they are going to run tests on her.” she said, as if this conversation was now worth her precious time.
“What kind of tests?” Aaron asked, we all leaned in a little closer.
“We want to see if the infected patients are affected by animals. Nothing special but if you want to watch your precious dog get tested I guess it wouldn‘t harm anyone. Just promise not to do anything irrational. I’ll send someone to bring you there in a little bit. Don’t cry to me if a patient murders your little dog.” she said, but before she could hand up Aaron said this:
“Wait. I want to make a deal with you.” he said. We heard nothing on the other line for a while, we almost thought she hung up but then she answered back.
“And that would be?”
“We allow you to run these tests on Heidi, but if she passes them being that she is not eaten, then we get her back. Forever.” he said. We all smiled, but then the obvious sunk in. Zombies could eat Heidi.
“Hmm. Okay, I think that is reasonable, but if you do get your dog back somehow I want you to keep it on a tight leash.” She said and without another word, she hung up. We all started to slap hands and hug each other in victory when Jonas had to bring us down.
“Do you really think that slimy witch is going to go through with the plan?” Jonas asked, leaning against the island. We all turned to him and all looked away swiftly. He was becoming intolerable.
“She will. If she doesn’t we can always blackmail her.” Jonah said, throwing something into the sink where it made a sharp clanking noise inside, stirring us out of our dazes. We would be leaving soon to either witness or not witness our beloved pet’s death. Talk about nerve-wracking.
We had gotten dressed into the Utopian citizen attire and was escorted by a boy no older then the lot of us. He went by the name Oval, we didn‘t pay him any attention, he seemed harmless and brainwashed. Once we reached the lab, Oval sat us down behind the scientists who were clustered around computers and papers watching the scene in front. A ceiling to floor one way mirror was in front showing Heidi, hooked up by a leash on a pole in the corner of the white room. We all watched desperately as the scientists talked in the foreign language of science and the clock tick above.
About thirty minutes later, Oval came back and took a seat near us. Sarah and him started talking and I could hear her laugh a couple times. That’s how Sarah worked. Nothing against her, but she was a flirt. Outgoing and outspoken, with a great personality, that was Sarah. Don’t get me wrong, she wasn’t a slut, she was just nice and befriended more boys then girls in her lifetime.
“When’s the testing going to begin?” Chris asked with an annoyed tone, I was thinking the same exact thing. I was nervous about it, but at the same time I wished nothing more but for it to be over and to have Heidi back -- that is if she survived. Eh, let me think positive… she’s going to live.
It was at least forty minutes later when one of the men in a lab coat approached us. He was holding a steel clipboard close to his chest and he looked more nervous then any of us.
“Thank you for your patience. We are about to begin. We are going to put in a sedated infected patient inside and give it the vaccine to wake it up and see if what happens from there.” he said, rubbing his sweating forehead. We all gave him a look and he turned away and walked off quickly.
They brought in a zombie into the room passed out. He stayed on the ground, drooling a slobbery mess. Heidi sat in the corner watching it as it slept. Once in a while she would bark or growl at it, but she stayed calm most of the time. The zombie’s eyes busted open after Heidi had given a loud, sharp bark. The patient made a growling noise and started to drag itself towards the one way mirror, ignoring Heidi. She started to bark more and the voices of the scientists became louder and more urgent. The patient got to his feet and started to ram itself into the wall, bashing it’s head, we all watched in shock as the zombie soon died for the blows to it’s head.
“So. Does that mean that zombies aren’t effected by animals?” Destiny spoke out after everything was deathly silent.
“Maybe. I think we should do another test where there aren’t any human blood around.” one of the scientists said. They kicked us out and set up a camera so we could watch the test. They got another sedated patient and placed him in the room again. Heidi had laid down and ignored the disgusting thing. Once the cannibal woke up it looked around confused and started to wander around the room, paying no attention to Heidi. We cheered out in victory! No wonder Heidi survived the apocalypse, no zombies were after her.
Dr. Xeon showed up to talk to the scientists about the tests that they repeated at least eight times. It was like they were trying their hardest to get rid of the dog! Oval had to escort us back to our apartment and Dr. Xeon told us that we would get the ’rotten thing’ after she gets a serious bath. So we lay on our beds for the first time in Utopia at least five o’ clock in the morning. What a day. Well more like two days. When I set my head on the pillow, I passed out.
