Chapter Eleven: Utopia Isn’t So Perfect

In the middle of the night, I was awoken by the sound of a helicopter. For a minute I was confused, but then I shot up straightforward in my cot, sweat starting form on my brow. I ripped the sheets off of me and pushed open the hatch door. A helicopter was hovering over us tossing my hair wildly, it then released a ladder that dropped to the ground inside the gates.

“Please grab hold of the rope and we will pull you up. You are safe.” someone said through a megaphone off of the helicopter. I wanted to cry. I grabbed at the ladder, not thinking about anything else. Before I grabbed hold, I turned around to wake up my friends to find them behind me. I guess I’m not the only one who heard them. We all grabbed hold of the ladder, hugging Heidi and everyone close to it. We were pulled up high above the ground. I looked down to see zombies looking at their midnight snack being lifted away.

Inside of the rescue helicopter we were greeted by a soldier and a female scientist.

“Hello. My name is Dr. Xeon.” the woman said, bringing us over to the seating areas where we buckled ourselves in. Jonas was holding onto Heidi tightly.

“What’s going on?”  Sarah asked, looking around.

“You are being rescued. After the outbreak, the government set up a base in the middle of the USA. After bombing everywhere else, trying to kill off the disease, we were starting to hear SOS’s through the radio. We heard one of your SOS’s.” she explained explained, handing us all water bottles.

“Our SOS?” Chris asked. I was along with him, I’ve never sent one out.

“I sent one every night while you guys were asleep.” Ryder explained, finishing off his water.

“Once we hear a SOS, we immediately go out to find them. The base we are taking you to is called Base 89 “Utopia”. The government is planning to cease the illness and restart the human race.  So far we have rounded up more then 1,000 survivors. You guys are lucky.” she smiled, moving back to the soldier who was holding a large gun and shooting out occasionally at a zombie below.

I looked over at my friends. I smiled at them.

“We’re safe.” I whisper and we all start crying happy tears.

But we weren’t.

After landing in Base 89, we were quickly assigned to a living quarters underground. There we were cleaned up and some doctors took blood samples, hair, and flesh samples. Dr. Xeon took us to our quarters to find our rooms. She explained that the government wanted all the big groups of survivors to stay together. When I asked why, she shrugged her shoulders. We were placed in an apartment. We had real beds, not some flimsy cots. I immediately threw myself onto a bed moaning loudly.

“I hope this doesn’t mean we have to go back to school.” Mandy said. We all started laughing hysterically.

“I wouldn’t mind school.” Alayna said, taking off her shoes.

“I would!” Mandy grumbled. I took my shoes off as well and ran to the bathroom.

“A real shower!” I yelled hugging the bathtub wall. I heard laughing in the other room, but I was serious. I locked myself in the bathroom and started to strip down. I started the shower and had stood there letting the warm water pour over me. When we went through the disinfection process before coming here, they only gave us shots and cleaned our cuts and fixed Aaron’s wrist. This was way more soothing then antiseptic wipes and needles. After getting out of the shower I found clothes all folded and ready on the counter. I didn’t hear anyone come in. I put them on and brushed my teeth with a new toothbrush and a strong toothpaste. When I got out I found my friends all cleaned up and in similar clothes as me.

I sat down at the couch in the living room area to watch some program about Base 89. It was boring and the man’s voice who was narrating was droning.

“Knock, Knock?” Dr. Xeon’s voice called, peeking through the door. She entered with some bags.

“Looks like you all got cleaned up and fresh! I got some breakfast for you guys!” she chirped setting down the bags on the table along with some papers. We all bounded to the bags to find pancakes, biscuits, bacon, eggs, and sausage. We started to dig in when Dr. Xeon lifted up the paper.

“What’s that?” Jonah asked, feeding Heidi a piece of sausage.

“All newcomers here have to sign a treaty.” she said, handing us all papers.

“Treaty? Like an agreement?” Jonah asked, looking at the paper, curiously.

“Yes, I will come back later to pick them up. Oh, by the way, the government elects an adult to look after young survivors who are not with a guardian. They elected me. Safe farewell.” she smiles at all of us then leaves without another word.

“What does the thing say?” Destiny ask, looking down at the paper.

“To follow the rules, obey your guardian or mentor, blah, blah, blah.” Jonah said, immediately signing the paper. I followed him by doing the same. After we all signed we returned to breakfast.

“I want to go explore. Want to come?” Ryder asked getting up off of the couch.

“Yeah.” we all said in unison. We slipped on our new shoes and followed Ryder through a corridor where we all stopped when we heard a hushed conversation. We all spread ourselves against the wall, eavesdropping.

“There was an incident this morning.” a man’s voice called out.

“What type?” it was Dr. Xeon’s voice. We all listened harder.

“A mental patient stabbed a scientist with a syringe who was trying to take some blood work.” the man informed. There was silence.

“Base 89 is not supposed to go down this road!” she cried out. We heard something slam against the wall.

“We are doing our best to control it, President Xeon.” the man said. She was president?!

“You better! If Base 89 fails, then all of the work we have done will go up in smokes!” Dr. Xeon yelled.

“I assure you it will not.” he said, his voice staying calm.

“Good. Because if you won’t then the whole world is damned.” she said.

“President, if you don’t mind my asking, but wasn’t the whole point of spreading this disease to start Base 89 to become known as the President who brought back the world through this chaos?” the man asked.

“Edwin, why must you ask such vain questions? Of course I did. I want to be the President who saved the world.” she says, her voice becoming large with excitement.

“Even though you destroyed it intentionally.” Edwin asked. I heard her growling with anger.

“Well I couldn’t save the USA how it was. It was too broken. I had to make it hit rock bottom.” she said, her voice low and stern. Ryder looked over at us his eyes wide. He pointed back to our apartment door and we hurried towards it with a lot on our mind. Dr. Xeon had started the whole infection?!
