Chapter Seventeen: Go Save Her

                Sarah’s POV:

We stopped at the nearby city that had to get ‘cleaned up’. It was called Nirvana and it looked as disgusting and run down as ever. Houses were charred from fires, trees were split from the trunk, wrecked cars laid in the street, and the worst was the stench. Like ten million rats crawled up in one place and died and decomposed in the baking sun for three years. That kind of stench hung in the air.

I didn’t understand fully why we were cleaning up this little shabby town and have to waste our time cleaning crap while we were perfectly fine back at Utopia/Base 89.

We had unloaded and suited up in these ridiculous getups that doctors wear when they are treating a quarantine victim or something. We looked like a group of posers. We had no business out here in our ‘clean-up suits’ and rebuild a destroyed town.

“Welcome to Nirvana! We plan on rebuilding this little town and making this Base 90. You three—“ one of the officers said, pointing to me, Alayna and Chris, “—you go with Mr. Deckland and the rest can come with me.”

We grouped off with our assigned chaperone and picked our weapon of choice—litter picker upper thingy, mega mop and bucket, firefighter sized hose, and Aaron’s assigned job: a small hand shovel and a lot of sample baggies.

I chose a litter picker upper thingy—mostly because I had volunteered at a clean-up the city service where I had to pleasure of picking trash up with these things. It was immensely fun. Not.

Alayna and I talked as we drudged through trash and exploded building limbs.

“This sucks.” I moan as I pick up a sliver of some kind of aluminum and trashed it away it the garbage bag in my hand.

“I know! Damn Xeon gotta be in our business all the time, like she is our momma or something!” Alayna fumed, picking and trashing something up angrily.

“She is our legal guardian.” I said, laughing lightly as I did. Alayna paused for a second, the sun glinting on her hair, making her look like one of those model girls off of those shampoo commercials.

“Ugh!” She yells, stomping her foot down and something underneath her cracked. She looked down and screamed and started jumping away frantically. I screamed too, even though I didn’t have a clue why she was jumping around like a jackrabbit that was just electrocuted.

“What?!” Mr. Deckland screams running over towards us with his double barrel shotgun aimed and cocked already. Alayna doesn’t have enough time to say what it was because at that moment, a hand shoots up out of the ground at the place where Alayna stomped her foot. I screamed and tumbled back and fell on top of debris and scrambled to get up when something snatched at my headgear.

“AH!” I screamed for maybe a second before another hand reached down and grabbed my wrist.

“Sarah!” Alayna screamed and lunged towards me to try to pry the hands off of me while I heard something wiz near my ear singing a million tremors inside me and ringing deafened me.

I felt the grip of the bluish, bony hands release me and I was scooped up by Mr. Deckland and brought me to the bus were I stripped out of the clean-up suit.
