Chapter Twelve: Hatred Burns Deep

We stand there in the foyer, panting for air. Dr. Xeon set up this whole outbreak...

I looked around at all of my shocked friends. Their eyes were wide and their mouths were hanging open in either gaping for air or raw surprise. Or the combination of the both.

"What are we going to do?" Chris asked, sitting down at one of the benches in the foyer.

"I know what I'm doing." Jonas said, marching away from us. We start to hear paper tearing and we jump up to find Jonas ripping up a treaty.

"Stop!" Jonah yelled, taking the papers away from his twin.

"Yes, Jonas, if you rip that up, they will probably kick us out or something!" Mandy said picking up the tattered pieces.

"But Dr. Xeon started the whole disease! Just imagine what she would do if Base 89 fails. She may start putting this stuff in the air where our skin would melt right off the bone!" Jonas argued, slamming his hand on the island counter.

"Then let's hope it doesn't fail." Ryder said, picking out the tape dispenser out of a drawer and handing it to Mandy who started to tape Jonas's ripped up treaty back together.

"Yeah, let's hope." Jonas sneers then taking off to one of the bedrooms and continues to slam the door. We all start to gather around the island. Some of us were crying while others were raking their heads in stress.

"What are we going to do?" Mandy asked, her eyes red from tears.

"Nothing right now." Ryder said, tapping the side of his finger on the countertop repeatedly. Mandy chocked through her tears, pounding her fist on the table then pointed accusingly at the door.

"That woman killed everyone! Our friends, our family, our world! She has destroyed our nation and mostly everyone in it! She has caused the end of the world and for what?! A better one? It's not better if someone like her is running it. Not if she is risking the remained population of human beings for this mission to pass." Mandy yelled, more tears springing from our eyes. Unwanted tears stung at my eyes and I brought my hand up to cover my mouth. She was right. Dr. Xeon killed more people then the Holocaust and World War II put together.

"We need to stop her." I say, "Expose her. If others know about what she has done, she'll be murdered by one of the citizens in no time."

"But that's risky. What if she starts to tell everyone we are liars? They'll kill us!" Alayna said, scratching her head.

"That would go against exactly what she wanted. No more murders." Chris said, biting his thumb nail.

"Yeah, it'll go totally against her and she may do something rash and get everyone killed. Again." Destiny said wiping away her own tears. It felt like the first day everything started to fall apart. We were all lost in a dying world, but together we can find our way through. Hopefully we can do the same thing here.

"Exactly. Let's just get through the next few days and find her weakness or whatever." Ryder said, taking a water out of the fridge, that was when Dr. Xeon knocked on the door. We all froze and I could see everyone's eyes widen in shock.

"Did she hear?!" Ryder whispered, closing the fridge. We all shrugged our shoulders.

"Hello?" Her voice called from behind the door. A chill ran through my bones and it felt impossible to breathe.

"Come in." Jonah called and she did as he commanded. I tried to give her the dirtiest look possible, but all that came on my face was a frown. She looked at all of our faces then her own frown appeared on her face.

"What's wrong. You all look upset. And where is the ninth one?" she asked, peering around us. She was talking about Jonas. Before we could answer her question, Heidi barreled towards her snarling ferociously! I gasped when she bounded right into Dr. Xeon who collapsed with a: "Ooof!". She tried to laugh it off, but when Heidi started to snap at her, she started to scream and protect herself.

"Heidi!" Jonah snapped, the dog failed to listen and bit Dr. Xeon on the wrist where a large amount of blood started to drip down to her elbow.

"Get this dog off of me!" she shrieked, trying to kick the large dog off of her. A small smile crept onto my face, but I quickly removed it and helped the others try to tare Heidi off of Dr. Xeon.

"I'm so sorry about that!" Jonah said, tugging at her collar to stop her unruly growling.

"Ugh! Get that blasted dog away from me! It probably gave me some type of rabies!" She cried touching her bloodied arm. Sarah had fetched some towels and the first aid kit and was trying to disinfect the bite wounds.

"We are terribly sorry, Dr. Xeon, Heidi is just...protective." Sarah says, padding at the bite marks.

"Protective?! She mauled me! I want that dog gone!" she yells standing up to dust herself off.

"Get rid of her?! Are you nuts?!" I shouted, not really caring that she could destroy the rest of the population with the snap of her fingers.

"I don't think you get it. Utopia is supposed to be a new beginning. Not a shelter for aggressive dogs." she said, then snapping the papers off of the island.

"Please! Dr. Xeon, give her another chance! She isn't aggressive!" Jonah cried, hugging his dog's neck.

"I doubt that. I'll send a vet down to take it away. Good day, children." she said, slamming the door closed. Jonah slammed his fist on his tables and from behind him I could see Jonas opening his door.

"I hate her!" Jonah yelled with fresh tears in his eyes, threatening to slide down his face.

"What happened?" Jonas asked, reaching his hand out to pat Jonah's back.

"She is going to put Heidi down!" Jonah cried, tears flying down his cheeks. We all started to cry with him. She killed our families and now she was going to kill a member of our own mixed up family. Heidi barked and whined at our crying faces. She would lick our tears off and wag her tail excitedly. When the vet came we all pet her for the last time and she placed a cold, wet nose on each of our palms as if saying thank you and good bye.

"I'm gonna miss you, girl." Jonah said, hugging her neck. It took all of my strength not to collapse and make a huge fool of myself in front of everyone. When the man placed a muzzle over her snout, Jonas pushed him off of her and started to remove it.

"She isn't a bad dog!" He yelled yanking it off.

"Come on, child. Don't make this any harder then it has to be." the man said, remaining calm. When he finally got Jonas off of her, he proceeded to walk Heidi out along with three other vets. Once they were gone we all sat around the living room, sad. That was when Aaron came up with a plan.
