Chapter Seven: Mixed Feelings

After we decided the bombing was over, we emerged from the pit and into the now destroyed city that used to be Baltimore. Tears rolled down my cheek effortlessly. Everything was in ashes. The who school was in ruins. The ruble went up to my knees. The train tracks were gone. The houses. Everything. We were probably the only living thing in miles. I broke down. I sat down in the dead grass, picking up handfuls of ash and letting it fall through my fingers. This was once my school. This ash.

I looked over to the satellite center. It was somewhat still standing. The roof was missing while most of the second story was crumbling. The first story was still there though. I looked over to see Ryder staring at it with sorrow filled eyes.

“Hey,” I said, standing up to take his hand, “Are you okay?”

“Yeah.” he whispered. I squeezed his hand, which was shaking.

“We should go see what is worth saving.” Chris piped up. Ryder jerked awkwardly.

“No!” Ryder shouts, discarding my hand to put on his gun. I stepped back. Flames burnt up whatever sorrow was left in his eyes. Chris stepped back also, raising his arms in defense.

“And why not?” Aaron asked, stepping up. Alayna put her hand on his arm, trying to get him to back down, but he was too stubborn.

“Well, was there anything in there before you left, Aaron?” he asked. Aaron squinted his eyes in the sun and folded his arms.

“Just a lot of computers, but it was dark and I wasn’t really looking for anything.” he explained.

“Computers! They might explode or something! You know more about it then me, Aaron.” he argued. Aaron thought about it for a while.

“Yeah, it may short circuit on us, but why would it do that after all of this bombing? They are either all destroyed or already exploded. Anyways, they don‘t literally explode, just make a popping sound then shut off, maybe some smoke, but nothing dangerous. Nothing compared to what we‘ve been through already.” There was his brain. His brilliant brain that Alayna loved most about him. We all looked back at Ryder, who was now running his hands through his hair.

“We are going with or without you.” Chris said, taking Destiny’s hand to lead her towards the satellite center. Destiny then jerked her hand out of his grip.

“Boy! Don’t you drag me around like I’m your rag doll! I’ll punch the stupid right out of you if you think you can touch me whenever you want!” Destiny yelled. I couldn’t help laugh. Chris was trying to hold back his blushing, but it was clear on his face.

“Sorry, Destiny. Didn’t know I needed permission to touch my woman.” he winked. More giggles. Destiny’s eyes were now larger then grapefruit.

“Look, last night I was scared to death. I thought that was my last night and you were the closest thing to Usher or Chris Brown in miles. Sorry to break it to you, but now that I know I am going to survive, I don’t need to set my standards so low.” Ouch.

“DANNNGG!” Aaron busted out. We all started laughing hysterically. Chris stayed quiet and his face never returned to it’s natural color.

“Well, at least I know my girl loves me.” Aaron said, putting his arm around Alayna’s neck casually.

“Who ever said I loved you?” Alayna said. Aaron, looked at her both scared and confused, “I’m just kidding, Aaron!” she laughed. He smiled and took her into a large embrace. We all smiled warmly at the two love birds, minus Chris, who was still heartbroken.
