As I pull into the drive through I place an order for five fries and and drinks. It goes silent for a few moments as they all stuff their faces with the warm, and salty fries. After everyone eats I pull off and start driving back home. It would take about 1 and a half hours to get back home. I was hoping that by the time I got to Alex's house they would be more sober. I kept hearing and feeling a phone going off so I decided to grab the phone and take a look at what's going on. Of course it was my phone and of course it was my parents trying to get a hold of me. I take the time to read the text sent, but I don't answer. Mistake number 7 looking at my phone while driving. I put the phone down and continue driving.
Around 30 minutes of driving has passed and I am starting to get tired. I think all the adrenaline of tonight's events are starting to go away. This is the first time I had ever been out driving at night. The road is peaceful and the sky is clear. I would be enjoying the scenery in any other circumstance, but I can only focus on the amount of trouble we will be in when this night is over. Taylor, Abby, and Alex are all sleeping while Celeste is wide awake.
Out of the corner of my eye I see that Celeste is being all fidgety. I assume it's because she is uncomfortable and tired. Soon enough Celeste calmed down and started to stare out the window. It was like she was in her own world, like she forgot she was in a car. The closer we got to Alex's house the more anxiety I had about everything and the more I feared the consequences.
We were about 20 minutes from the house when I heard a seatbelt click. I know for a fact it was Celeste so I yell at her to put it back on. Doing that woke everyone else up but I could care less about that. Celeste did not put it back on so I had to put it on her myself. I quickly turn around and put the seatbelt on her. Mistake number 8 taking my hands off the wheel and looking away from the road. When I turn back around my heart stops and I feel myself panic. I had drifted into the lane going in the opposite direction. There was a car going faster than it should have been heading straight towards my car. The panic starts to take over and I can't think of what to do. Mistake number 9 panicking. I finally snapped out of it and tried to swerve back onto my lane but by the time I did so it was too late. BOOM! The next thing I knew we were upside down in a ditch.
