Billies POV
“The hair looks great Billie Joe!” My mom exclaims from the front door.
“Yeah mom thanks I love you, bye” I rush before shutting the door to the truck. I turn to Sapphire with a grin on my face.
“You ready?!” She grins back.
“I was born ready” I dramatically hold my fist against my racing heart. She giggles into her hand as I turn on the engine and pull out from my house.
“Bye house, bye trees” Saph waved out the window “Bye cars, bye alley way I got beat up in”
“Okay that’s enough” I cut her off with a laugh. I turn up the radio to listen to Smashing Pumpkins and continue to drive. This was really happening. The band could get signed, we could make it big! Everything I’ve ever wished- plus more has come true. The boys were ecstatic when I told them about LA. Never would I think when I was a depressed, 14 year old playing in my basement that I would get a chance like this.
“Are the other two meeting us up there?” Sapphire asks, after about 20 minutes of driving.
“Yeah next week” I say, shifting in my seat. I shoot up when I realise that I hadn’t told Sapphire about the good news. “Oh guess what!” I almost shout, rocking backwards and forwards in my seat.
“What?” She raises an eyebrow.
“Mike and Tre got this huge drug deal. Like, huge. They even had to drive to Portland!”
“I don’t understand why that’s good news” She crosses her arms. I can see why she doesn’t like this whole “drug dealing” thing.
“We’re gonna get a fuckton of money from this… which means….” I edge her on. Saph simply shrugs, still not understanding. “We can pay off the debt!” I throw my hands off the steering wheel as the car swerves along the road. We both scream as Sapphire reaches out, gripping the wheel.
“You fucking idiot! Oh my God!” She shouts. I laugh before shooing her hands away so I can continue driving.
She huffs in her seat. “I guess that’s good…”
I look at her with my eyebrows furrowed. Was she expecting something else? I’m not sure why she would be sad, she always opens up to me but lately I feel she’s been more closed off than usual.
The next two and a half hours are different. I’m turning up the radio, playing old cassettes and CDs of my dad’s. I had told her a lot about him. Sapphire taught me not to mope around and be pissed about his death, but to remember the good times and blasting his favourite music. Of course in this little discussion, Saph had to ruin the mood by whispering “Carry on my wayward son” in my ear. It was after then that she started complaining about being hungry. I was so full of adrenaline that I hadn’t even realised how starving I was. I pull over to the next diner I see, rolling up the windows and turning off the engine.
Sapphire sighs happily in her seat, looking out the window at the almost dead diner. I swear, one mention of food to her and she’s the happiest girl alive. We both stumble out of the car, shoving each other to try and get through the doorway first. As we burst through the diner, we only catch the attention of the middle-aged lady sitting at the counter, face smothered in cheap makeup. She only looks us up and down and leaves to go out the back. Sapphire and I both look at each other with a grin before sliding into one of the booths. As I look around, I only see an oldish man sipping on cheap coffee with his head down. Little did he know that that “coffee” was no coffee at all. Hey, you pick up a lot when you had to sit in the back and watch your mom work at a diner for 3 hours, when you were 12.
