" Shiro ! You really came ! I missed you so much ! " Kayano threw her entire weight on me the moment I stepped out the lift, wrapping her arms around my shoulders as the both of us went toppling over on the platform.

" I missed you too, " I awkwardly patted her back as she clung on tightly to me, unrelenting.

It had only been a week since I was away from school. Kayano and some of the others would often drop by Nagisa's place when classes were over and bring back some treats they made in Home Economics or a chocolate taiyaki from a roadside stall. They'd usually stay around for dinner after that until the sky dimmed and the sun disappeared. Having been around them for an entire week already, it was natural that I would have grown closer to them compared to the rest of the class.

" You sure you weren't skipping school on purpose ? Your scary dad popped by a few times too to see if you'd returned you know ! " the boy smirked, slapping me on the back.

Other than Karma, of course. The whole time he was staying over, he was causing more trouble than good half the time. Surprise attacks, traps, frontal attacks ... the likes.

" Karma ! " Nagisa hurriedly clamped his hands over Karma's mouth before throwing me an apologetic look.

" Yea. I'm better now, thank you, everyone. "

How could I explain it ?

This class, made up of society's leftovers, was somehow ... unbelievably warm.

" But y'know, once you've gotten to Kyoto, it seems like you could forget entirely about the assassination ! I mean, it's such great scenery ! Like a place completely unrelated to assassination and all that ! " someone exclaimed as the group turned a corner and wandered down the deserted alley.

An assassination trip hidden under the guise of a normal school trip. I guess even that arrogant man could do something like this once in a while. Every group had been allotted a time slot where we were supposed to come up with a plan using the limited two hours that we had, although as it was still supposed to be an enjoyable ' school trip ', the one doing the killing would be the sniper preparing his equipment at the top of the cracked tiled rooftops. Even though I had heard that the government had managed to bring in a ' professional sniper ', he was still fairly obvious even though I was already trying my best to ignore his presence. However, I had heard of cases where one shouldn't judge a book by its cover, so I would have to let it pass for now and wish for the best.

I picked up a seemingly innocent-looking silver trinket, a single slightly pressed cylinder no longer than my thumb attached to a silver ring. The owner of the dilapidated stall, a tired old lady, weakly fanned herself and a lazy glance would sometimes stray over to where I was standing, picking through the many items which were laid haphazardly upon the creaking wooden table. Among this messy pile of items, a few things had caught my eye so far. A small palm-sized jar of Konpeito ( a type of Japanese sugar candy ), a wooden puzzle box which when solved would open up to reveal a small hidden compartment, a crude-looking skeleton key and this queer looking key-chain, which a small blade would slide out from when a button was pressed.

Although our aim was to assassinate that alien of a teacher in an unfamiliar surroundings, which would supposedly train us in becoming more flexible in the various approaches in assassination, we weren't allowed to flaunt our weapons in public, which meant we would then have to rely entirely on that ' professional sniper ' that the government had hired instead. I reached for the inside of my jacket where the blade was strapped nonetheless, slipped between a patch of fabric whose thread had loosened over the years and now substituted as a perfect hiding spot.
