I met up with Isabella after school. I told her everything that Eli had said word for word. It was humiliating that I had caved into his strong, persistent requests. I just thought agreeing would shut him up. The whole time I spoke, Isabella grinned. The excitement and an "I told you so" look flashed in her eyes. I fought every urge to slap her. I hated it when other people were right.

"You are going to have so much fun tonight!" Isabella's grin widened. "When you eat, be sure you chew with your mouth closed and swallow before you talk. It's very unsightly if you don't."

I rolled my eyes, "Isabella, I know my manners and how to be presentable."

"You should wear an appealing dress," she said and picked at a loose string on her shirt. She only lived a block away and it was nice to walk home with her.

"A dress?" I asked in disbelief. "To go to the food court in the mall? Isabella, that's crazy. It's practically fast food. Who dresses up to eat fast food?"

"Anyone who wants to impress Eli Benson," Isabella cracked her knuckles. It was amazing how laid back a nerd could be. She was cool and that was why she was my nerd.

"Obviously I don't need to impress him since he already asked me on a date," I was careful not to use the word "out" because that would sound official, which it was not.

Isabella giggled and elbowed me in the side, "You are so excited inside. You just don't want to show it and break your rough exterior."

I wasn't rough. I most certainly wasn't. I was just plain stubborn. If something wasn't going the way it was supposed to, then I'd hold my ground. I didn't like Eli before, and I'm not going to like him now. I was just about to tell Isabella, but we were at her house.

"Goodbye, Libi! See you at school tomorrow!" Isabella said happily and waved as she flew onto her porch and opened the door.

I kicked at the rocks on the ground all the way to my house. Even though Adri was mad at me, I was still upset about not having her company. It just wasn't the same without that bubbly blonde. Okay, she was really annoying, but she had been annoying by my side for years. At the end of my driveway, I stopped in my tracks. I turned around to stare at the pale green house across the street from me. I took a deep breath and walked up to the door. I knocked. The door opened slowly and Adri's mother was standing there with her hair swooped back in a bun.

"Hello, Libi. I haven't seen you in a while. Is everything okay?" she asked. Adri's mom looked nothing like her. She was plump with ridiculously long, straight, black hair, and her eyes were so dark that they were almost as black as her hair.

"I'm fine," I said. Adri must not have told her about our argument. "Is Adri here? I need to speak with her."

"In her room," she smiled once before stepping out of the doorway to let me through.

The thing I liked about Adri's room was that it was all the way at the end of the house. It was practically secluded from every other room. We were able to laugh and stay up late without anyone ever hearing us. Ah, I missed those days.

I opened the door and she was sitting on her bed listening to her iPod. Adri didn't see me at first since her face was buried in a book. I didn't remember her actually reading for fun. She finally looked up and her eyes narrowed.

"What are you doing here?" she asked nastily.

"I... I'm sorry. I shouldn't be mean to Eli. I shouldn't be mean to you. I shouldn't use you or anybody for anything... I... I..." I couldn't think of anything else.
