I paced in my room. Was Isabella really going to call Eli? My heart started beating faster. I blamed it on the constant moving. I put my hand to my chin and felt a bit of perspiration. I ignored it. What was I going to do if he called? I know! I'd hang up. It's so... so simple. It was very easy to ignore him. Well, maybe it wasn't, but I could put on an act. I've got the plan for the phone, but what about at school? If he asked me out at school, then I would probably stand there, dumbstruck, and he'd take it as a yes. There was no where to go if he found me. Aha! The girls' bathroom! He didn't get to me last time. He talked through the door, but that wasn't face to face. If he asked me, I'd be silent. I stopped pacing.

With a huge sigh, I sat on my bed and glared at the phone. Why did Alexander Graham Bell have to invent the freakin' thing? It was an extreme misfortune for that addictive object to ever have been glowering in my house. The phone rang. My heart jumped. I checked the caller ID and gritted my teeth. It was Isabella. Now, for the moment of truth.

"Hello?"

"Well, I told Eli," Isabella said in a casual voice. I couldn't hear any emotion in her tone. It was excrutiatingly painful not knowing.

"And?" my voice speaked. How pittiful. I shouldn't even care.

"He said.. some things," Isabella did a good job at keeping up with the casual act. I hated it.

"What did he say?" I growled.

"Okay, okay," Isabella laughed. "I told him and he didn't sound surprised. He said that he won't ask you out, though. He said if you really wanted to go out with him, you would ask."

I hadn't realized that I'd been holding my breath until she said that last sentence. I gulped for air. "If he asked, I would have run away or kept my mouth shut."

"Because you can't say no," Isabella stated oh-so sure of herself.

"Yes I can," I straighted up my posture as if she could see me slouching.

"Do you like him?" Isabella asked abruptly.

Dead air fell between us. My mouth was open, but no words came out. Everything I wanted to say was caught in my throat. Everything I actually felt was stuck in my brain where I didn't want it to leave. I didn't know how long we had been silent, but a small chuckle came from Isabella's side of the phone.

"I knew you did," she said softly. "If only you could do something about it."

I groaned, "I'll hang up on you."

Another laugh, "I know you will, too. But listen, if you hang up, I'll only have more reason to believe that you have fallen for this egotistical sweetheart."

"But I..."

"If you don't, all you have to do is say you don't like him," Isabella said. "Just say no."

Silence. Somehow, I couldn't form the words. My lips wouldn't move in the way they should and my tongue felt numb and disobedient in my mouth. Say it, Libi, say it!

"I.. libntis...ck..." my tongue flopped around uselessly. I sounded so stupid. I was glad she wasn't there in person to see how red I was.

"I've got to go, Libi," Isabella's laugh chimed again. "I'll talk to you about this tomorrow."

"Bye." At least I was able to manage that.

I hung up the phone and sat on my bed. This day wasn't going so well at all. I was able to say that I hated Eli before. I was able to say that I didn't like him. Was he using his charm for evil instead of good? Cocky guys like him just couldn't handle that one girl doesn't like him. This turned out to be a crappy day. I turned off my light and plugged in my 80's boombox, lowering the volume. Listening to a little music before sleeping always helped me have a better night's rest.
