A New Spark, An Old Flame
Alex's POV:
A grin stretched across my face as Daya cracked another joke, the tenth one that day. Her infectious energy was a breath of fresh air. Everywhere I looked, all I saw was reasons to smile. Her presence filled the room, a warm and comforting wave.
"You're such a goofball," she smirked as I playfully peeked over her shoulder at her Fortnite game. My phone buzzed incessantly, revealing a string of texts from Kayla. Our conversations had become stale and infrequent. It felt like she was pulling away every time I reached out. I could practically feel her disinterest through the screen. Deciding not to respond, I sank into a guilty spiral of stalking her Twitter. I craved the sound of her voice, the comfort of our connection. But Daya was here, and I didn't want to seem like I was using her to fill a void.
"Lost in thought?" she asked, her brow furrowed with concern. "You seem a million miles away. Everything alright?"
"Yeah, absolutely," I stammered. Her genuine care was disarming. She always managed to pull a smile from me, a feeling both new and exciting.
"Just some random stuff," I mumbled, trying to deflect.
"Nothing I need to worry about?"
"Nope, you're good."
Her smile widened. "There you go. So, tell me, what's so charming about me?"
Daya paused the game, swiveling her chair to face me fully. Her hand brushed mine, sending a jolt through me. She slowly pulled me closer, her voice a soft whisper as she leaned in. "Your smile... it's like a siren song. It draws me in, along with everything else – your looks, your vibe... it all just clicks."
A genuine smile bloomed on my face. Cupping her cheek, I met her gaze and leaned in. Our lips met in a soft, sweet kiss. Her arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer as she deepened the kiss. I reluctantly pulled back, breathless.
"I like this," I breathed, my voice thick with emotion.
"Me too," she replied, a contented sigh escaping her lips.
She spun me around playfully, humming an off-key tune. Even the dissonance couldn't dampen my mood. Her happiness was music to my ears. We swayed in the room, a slow dance reminiscent of a comfortable old couple.
Kayla's POV:
Winded from our workout, I collapsed onto the bed, Asia and the dog curled up at my feet. Reaching for my phone, I noticed a text from Alex. My brow furrowed in annoyance. Before I could respond, I felt the shift beside me. Asia was gone.
She materialized at my side, her expression taut with unspoken anger. "Hey," I mumbled, concern tugging at my heart.
She simply shook her head and stalked away.
"Asia, what's wrong?" I called after her, scrambling to my feet. "Come on, talk to me."
She paused, her voice laced with hurt. "Am I just a rebound?"
My brows shot up. "Absolutely not!"
"It feels like it," she said, her voice small.
Frustration bubbled up inside me. "Okay, can we just talk about this calmly?"
"Isn't that what I'm trying to do?" A flicker of defiance sparked in her eyes.
"Look, communication is key. Let's just figure this out."
Asia rolled her eyes at my attempt at reason. "Get out."
"Asia, come on. Let's have a conversation."
"There's nothing to say! I think about you all the time, but you're just... a waste of time and energy."
"Hold on," I interrupted, my voice rising. "I fly back and forth to see you, and you act like this? You're always finding a reason to fight!"
She glared at me, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "Well, since it's such a big deal, go be with Alex. I'm sure she'd be thrilled."
My jaw clenched. "You're unbelievable. You know I cut things off with her for you, stopped thinking about her completely, and you STILL manage to make this about her?"
"Because I know you were in love with her!"
"Are you serious right now?" I roared. "Like you haven't cheated on me? Like you haven't fallen for someone else? I'm not some toy you can play with, Asia. I'm done with your drama. It
