#### Alex's POV:

I groaned as the hangover hit, my head pounding. "Lord Jesus Christ," I muttered, sitting up and grabbing some pills, washing them down with water. This wasn't my apartment—it was my friend's. I wandered down the hallway, drawn by the sweet smell of food.

"Oh hey, girl," Kiersten said while scrambling eggs.

"Good morning, bitches," I greeted them.

"What are we doing today?" I asked with a smile. Kiersten looked up.

"Y'all are getting the fuck outta my house."

I pouted. "But I like cooked meals."

Kait chimed in, "Bitch, your fat ass likes anything."

I flicked her off. "Mind your crackhead business." We ate and chatted for an hour, then I packed my nightclothes and left the apartment, saying goodbye.

#### 1 Hour Later:

I hadn't checked my phone until now, seeing messages from Kayla and Asia roll in. "What is she texting me for?" I whispered, ignoring Asia's message and going straight to Kayla's, who asked to see me. I responded with a yes.

When I got to my apartment, I saw Kayla coming out of my bathroom. "I'm changing the locks," I said.

She pouted. "I thought you liked when I popped up."

"Oh no, I just like the sex."

She scoffed. "Oh, so I'm just a sex toy to you?"

"Your words, not mine," I sang out. She checked her phone and sighed.

"Well, I guess this visit is cut short. Asia wants me for something." She grabbed her keys.

"Kay," I called after her. She turned around. "Tell your girlfriend to stop contacting me, thanks." She nodded and walked out the door.

I smiled, but the smile faded as I recalled the events of last night. I was too honest with my words. I walked to the back of the room, started my shower, and put things away, only to find a bear on my bed with a note: "Don't ever say I don't think of you - K."

I smiled and sent her a thank-you text before hopping in the shower.

#### 40 Minutes Later:

Finally done with my hair, I saw it was already 1:00. I grabbed my shoes, walked out the door, and drove to Kayla's house. My mind drifted to Asia's threatening text: "Don't get hurt chasing after someone who really doesn't want you." I couldn't deny it stung and filled me with doubt, but it didn't surprise me. I knew Kayla wouldn't choose someone like me. I pushed those thoughts aside as I pulled into her driveway.

Kayla opened the door with a big smile. "What's wrong with you?" I asked.

"Can't I be happy?"

"Are you ever really happy?"

"Fuck you," she shot back.

"Exactly," I laughed. "Don't be offended. It's nice to see you smile every once in a while. It's a beautiful smile."

"Girl, I know. That's why I use it to get all the females."

"You mean hoes or mistresses?" I teased.

She flicked me off. "What did you invite me for?"

She sighed. "I needed to vent and wanted your opinion because sometimes you give me a wake-up call."

"That's bullshit. You're very hard-headed."

She dropped the box she was holding and gave me a stank face. "Go suck a cock."

"Go suck two," I shot back. "What's in the boxes?"

"Something Asia ordered, I don't know," she said, opening it. "It's liquor."

"She hates weed, right?"

"I don't think she hates it. She just hates that I smoke it in the house. She hates the smell."

I nodded. "Well, shut up and sit down. Tell me what's up."

She sat down on the couch. "A couple of days ago, I told Asia how I felt."

"What did you say?" I asked.

#### Kayla's Flashback:

"You made me cut off the only person who checked in on me and told me to be safe every time I went somewhere, which is something you don't even do. The only friend who asked me how I was feeling every day and made sure I was okay. My friends, the ones I've known for years, don't even do that. But you don't care about me. You never ask if I'm okay, never think twice before arguing with me. You expect me to be okay with how you're treating me. I know you'll take this the wrong way, pick out the least important shit, and leave because you're not mature about your feelings. But at least act like you care. Try to take care of me, act like you give a fuck about me. I'm not choosing her over you, I just want you to act like you care. But that will never happen because your bond with me is different, and you think that's okay. But I'm glad you and your little friend have each other."

#### Back to Present:

I was speechless, my mouth wide open. "She stormed out on me and has been ignoring me since," Kayla said.

"Wow. Do you really feel that way?" I asked.

She nodded. "So why do you stay?"

"You don't understand, Alex."

"You're right, I don't understand. It's mentally miserable."

"I love the girl, Alex," she swallowed hard.

"Tasha and I argued about it too. You're not the first person to judge me and disagree with my choices."

"But love has nothing to do with it. You're only hurting yourself. You can love her from a distance. I don't see how you do it."

"We've been through so much. What would I look like giving it up?"

"I went through something like that and tried to let my heart give up. I broke down and couldn't do it. But at some point, something's gotta give and change."

"Maybe I don't want it to," she said angrily.

I was taken aback by her sudden anger. "You're right. I don't know how you feel, and I'm sorry I don't understand. You have to figure it out for yourself. I won't save you any longer if that's what you want."

I looked at her. "I'll leave you alone if that's what you want too." I got up. "I'm keeping the teddy bear. I'll drop your clothes off in the morning," I said quietly and walked out her door.
