Running Away

It was hard, but I was running again.

The police had came in, and thrown Doug into the car. My mother drove away to her mother's house, safe from my step father. While the police were trying to capture Doug, I snuck through the door and ran.

I'm a few blocks away now, I've only been running for 8 minutes.

What do I do now? I could run to the abandoned library, like I always do. What if Ed finds me? I didn't feel anything, I was numb and cold. I had forgotten my jacket by the door, but that doesn't matter now. All I can do is run. Run away from the dark home, run away from my problems. All I can do is run, and think.

I thought back to school, today had been a rough day. Courtney had been extremely offensive today.

We were on the basket ball court for lunch break.

"Hey loser!" she cackled with her prep friends. I chose to ignore her, as usual.

"Hey! C'mon, don't ignore me! Goth freaks like you need all the friends they can get!" I cringed as i heard this, and she saw.

"You don't like being called a goth freak? What about the Purple Eyed Freak? Hmm? You're a freak, that's for sure. You're whole family is made of freaks. Your step father is abusive, and your mother is a wuss that won't stand up for herse-"

I turned around, red faced.

"There's your freak face! Why are you so upset, hun?" Courtney and her friends cackled again.

I stomped up to her, my fists clenched. "Do not talk about me like that."

"Or what? You'll try to hurt me? You're a weakling."

"The freak thinks she can scare us?! Ha!" her accomplice jeered.

"Aww, is she crying? What's wrong little baby?" They were all hurting me. They shot words at me like an automatic rifle. My legs grew weak, and I sank to the ground.

More and more preps came and shouted insults at me. 'Freak', 'Unwanted child', and 'Baby' were just some of the insults I heard most.

I sat, raging, and trying not to cry.

"Hey! It's not nice to ign-!"

"ENOUGH!' I screamed. "STOP IT! I am tired of this agony! Just- just shut up! You don't know me! You don't know what I am put through!"

The preps just sat there staring at me.

"Leave me alone!! Okay?! Sheesh, just go away." I muttered.

They dispersed, probably going to their classes. I didn't mean to blow up like that, but I have been too kind in the past. Almost everyone had left the court, but one girl was left.

"What do you want?" I snarled, she flinched.

"I... I'm sorry..... They were so rude to you..."

"And why do you care?" I was probably a little too harsh on the poor girl.

"I.... I feel as though it was a bit uncalled for. It's good that you can stand up for yourself. I see that you're usually alone, do you want to sit by me tomorrow during lunch?" her voice was sweet and calm.

I didn't speak, instead, I examined her. She was about 5'3" and had long blond hair. Opposite of my short black hair. She had a sweet, calming voice, and she was really pretty. Her hazel eyes looked at me, wanting an answer. Not knowing what to say, I nodded my head.

Her face lit up as she gave me a piece of paper. "Squeee! Yay! See ya later!" She skipped off, her hair bouncing.

I looked at the paper, it had her phone number and her address.

That's how I met Ky, the only prep whose ever been kind to me. It seemed as though I had been running for hours. I slowed down, and looked behind me.

I saw the deep pink of the sunset crawling across the horizon. Where am I? I don't recognize this part of town. I looked at the street sign, Lincoln Ave. That street was familiar. I pulled out the note from Ky, and read her address again.

6793 Lincoln Ave.

I was close to her house... I walked along the road up to 6793.

The house was tall and a pale yellow color. There were lights on inside, and I saw Ky playing with a striped cat. As I walked to the door, I wondered if I should ring the doorbell. It's now or never.

Reluctantly, not knowing what would happen, I rang the doorbell.
