I slept uneasily that night. Ky had nearly died, and I was there to witness it. Her face was bruised and cut, while I'm surprised her arm isn't broken.
I sat up, not knowing what to do about this. Ky's breath was coming easily from her room and she was peacefully asleep. At 1:36 in the morning, there wasn't much for me to do to keep myself occupied. Looking at my unmade bed, and the makeup stained tears on my pillow, I saw how my life was going to be. I finally have a loving mother and father, Doug was finally gone, I had a sister, yet it still felt incomplete.
Ky I sighed. What was I supposed to do? She liked me, yet the feeling wasn't mutual. I was heterosexual, straight. Or at least, I think I am.
"Why is my life so difficult right now?" Rolling onto my bed, I closed my eyes.
I had to deal with the stress of school, Courtney, Ky, Doug and my mother, and worst of all, trying to keep my life together.
~~~~~
"Douglas! Get away from my daughter!" my dad''s voice rang out.
"Pete! Peter, watch out!!" my mother screamed at my dad.
Then there was a flash of metal as Doug raised the kitchen knife.
My true dad fell to the floor, red gooey liquid splashing onto my toys.
"Mommy? Is daddy okay?" I had asked my mother as she ran out the door, holding me.
"Daddy is okay sweetie, he's in a better place."
"What does that mean mommy?"
"He won't be back on this horrid planet ever again."
"Mommy-"
Doug ran up behind her and somehow managed to take me from her arms. He then put the knife with my father's blood on my throat, threatening to kill me as well.
"Now that the husband is out of the way," I could hear the smile in his voice. "Will you marry me?"
"Please!! Please just put my baby down!" my mother was sobbing on the pavement of the sidewalk. "I'll marry you, if it's what it takes! Just put my baby down!"
He then lowered me to the ground and embraced his new wife.
"Just know I will never love you. And my daughter will always remember what you did to her dad." The tears streamed from her cheeks onto the ground beside me. The knife came crashing down too, almost hitting me. She gasped and picked me up. There was no way she would leave me alone with that retched man, at least not until she became depressed and figured I could handle myself.
I was only a toddler at the time, but I remembered most of the story in great detail. Doug had killed my father and forced my mother into marriage.
~~~~~
"No! Doug! Dad!!" I woke up screaming and kicking my blankets off the bed. My nightmare had woken me, and I hadn't meant to freak out.
The pounding of footsteps alerted me of Ky's entrance.
"Vivian! Are you okay?!" her voice was full of worry. I then heard more footsteps, Ed and Sherrie had woken up too.
"I- I'm fine. Just a stupid nightmare..." I rubbed the tears from my eyes, forgotten makeup got wiped onto my hand.
"Vivian-" Ed came in, followed by his wife.
"She just had a nightmare, she's alright. You two can go back to sleep," Ky was calm but firm. Sherrie nodded and dragged her tired husband back into their room down the hall.
