Ever since the whole 'napping in John Doe's room' thing, your morning calls with Rey seemed to get increasingly nauseating by the day. But you couldn't remember the last time you'd heard her so...giddy...so you put up with it.
"Oh my god! You have a crush!"
"No I don't!" The pitch of your voice way too high to ever be convincing.
"Oh, you so totally do!"
"I'm hanging up," you yelled into the phone, closing your bedroom door before heading into the kitchen. You quickly grabbed your travel mug, a replacement for your old favorite, and stuck it into position before popping in a coffee pod.
"Oh Rey," she crooned, mocking you, "he's so handsome and mysterious and we just sit in his room and stare at each other." Your ear was suddenly assaulted by obnoxious kissing noises, Rey barely able to contain her giggles as you whined.
"You're the fucking worst, you know that?" you said with a laugh, snagging the creamer from the fridge and splashing some into your coffee.
"And yet you love me--"
"Like I have a choice."
With that you shared a laugh, snagging your keys off the counter and shoving them into your pocket as you walked the few feet to your front door. Pinching the phone between your ear and shoulder, you leaned against the wall and slipped into your work shoes. "I still don't even know his name," you finally relented.
Though it certainly wasn't for a lack of trying, the man was like trying to talk to a brick wall.
"Wow...so he really is a man of mystery, huh?"
"Fort fucking Knox," you mumbled, grabbing your coffee and twisting the lid on as you headed for the door.
"God, you know mom would wash your mouth out with soap if she heard the way you talk."
"Well, good thing mom's dead--"
"Jesus!"
"What?" You spit with oblivious defensiveness, "she is. Has been for awhile," you mumbled under your breath, turning your attention to locking your front door.
"Little dark for a Monday morning, don't you think?"
"I work in a level two trauma center and have a dead mom--dark is just my way of life at this point." You jiggled the handle a couple of times as you always did--a necessity for living in, you know, not the greatest building on the block. "I gotta go though, kiss the pups for me."
"I will. Try to have a good day, okay? Maybe lighten up a little."
"Yeah yeah yeah, love you."
"I love you too, kiddo."
You hung up the phone, tucking it away in your back pocket as you started your trek down the stairs.
"Lighten up a little," you mumbled to yourself, mocking her tone. You couldn't help but smirk, a rush of air leaving your nostrils in a restrained laugh.
If only she knew.
See, the truth was, you were feeling lighter than you had in a long time. You would never admit it to anyone, let alone Rey but...she was right.
Maybe you did have a little crush. That is, in a weird, we barely speak to each other, sort of way.
You couldn't explain it, there was just something about him, about the mystery man who you found bleeding out in an alley. Who'd asked you to stay and let you sleep in his bed.
