*Lunch*

Matthias's POV

"Kaz Brekker! I swear on Ghezen, if you don't give me my cookie back, I will rip you into pieces!" Nina yells. By now everyone in the lunch room  knows what's going on, but don't dare to turn around and check.

"Nina darling, as much as I enjoy getting threatened by you, I really could careless," Kaz says nonchalantly, biting into the cookie.

"Oh you son of a-" Nina lunges across the table, trying to grab Kaz. Matthias grab her before she could reach him, trying to tame her.

"Nina calm down, I have an extra cookie, you can have it," Matthias says, trying to calm the situation. Nina sits down with the humph, taking my cookie and biting into it. Kaz continues biting into his cookie, with a smirk on his face.

"What's up Crows?" Jesper asks, sitting down next to Wylan.

"Kaz stole my cookie."

"And I told you, I don't care," Nina flipped Kaz off. (I hope everyone knows what I mean)

"Hey, hey, watch it young lady," Matthias say.

"Ok 'mom'" Nina shoots back, rolling her eyes. Goodness, she's impossibly cute.

The Crows looked at each other for second before they all burst out laughing.

Time skip to the end of the day

Inej's POV

"Inej slow down, we're not running a race," Kaz yells from behind her. Kaz and Inej were walking to the Slat, where the rest of the Crows should be waiting. Nina and Matthias bunked the other half of school to do saints knows what. Saints please let them be holy, Inej thought was she saw Nina and Matthias walk out. Kaz had said that he might be a little late coming out of school, so Inej told Jesper and Wylan to go and that she'll stay here and wait for him. When Kaz walked out of the school, Inej caught the surprise in Kaz's eyes when he saw her waiting for him.

"You didn't have to wait, you know?" Kaz told her when he reached her.

"I know, I just felt bad for making you walk alone," Inej said. Kaz nodded slightly. Saints, this boy is impossible! Inej had met Kaz, Nina, and Jesper in seventh grade, when she was new to the town. Inej had accidently boarded a ship that took her to Ketterdam. She realized when they were about 2 hours into the journey. The captain had said that he wouldn't turn around. When she had reached Ketterdam she didn't know what to do. She was roaming the streets when a rather large woman came up to her and offered her a place to stay. Tante Heleen was best worst thing that had ever entered Inej's life. For 2 years, Inej went to school, hung out with her friends for some time, then went back to the house, where surly there would a client who she had to please.

She told Nina this for the first time in the eighth grade, where she tried her hardest to explain everything after she had noticed bruise on her arm. It was extremely hard to lie to Nina, so when Inej said that she had fell and hurt herself, Nina didn't buy it. A couple months later, Kaz and Jesper started noticing more bruises on her neck, arms, and legs. The first few times she was able to say that she fell or that she bumped into something, but eventually even they figured out she was lying, and so she told the the truth.

After that, all three of them had become protective over Inej in some way. Nina yelled at any boys who tried catcalling her, Jesper taught her some basic self-defense skills and tried to teach her how to shoot a gun, but she never quite got the hang of it. And Kaz... Well Kaz gave her her first knife.

It was the week after her 14th birthday and Kaz had asked her to meet him in the Barrel.

I have to give you something.

What is it?

You'll see when you get here.

When Inej got there, Kaz was holding something wrapped in paper. "What is it, Kaz?" Inej asked.

"Here," Kaz said, shoving the object into Inej's hand. Inej unwraps the gift and revealed a small knife. The blade was a bit curved toward the end and had a wood-colored handled. It came in a silver colored sheath.

"I know its not much but I thought that if I gave you something small to protect yourself with, you could avoid those bruises and cuts."

"Thanks Kaz, this means a lot." Kaz nodded with a stern face and stared at Inej while she inspected the knife. She buckled the knife sheath onto her right forearm and pulled down the sleeve of her jacket.

"Thanks Kaz," Inej said again.

"Yeah, of course." They stared at each other for a few seconds before Inej looked back at the knife. Inej didn't notice that Kaz continued to stare at her.

........

Jesper's POV

"How much longer are these love birds gonna take?" Jesper whined. The group had been waiting for Inej and Kaz for over 30 minutes.

"Give them some time, they need it," Wylan said. Everyone knew about Kaz and Inej's love story. They had been flirting with each other since the day they became friends. Well flirting isn't right word, Kaz wouldn't flirt for the life of him, but they would stare at each other and be deathly scary. Everyone was super annoyed by the two of them. They knew they liked each other, but wouldn't say a word. In fact, they would more farther away the closer they got. Like a never ending cycle.

The group turned around when they heard the door creak open. Inej walked in with Kaz right behind her. The group stared at them, looking to see if they could figure out what happened on their walk. Of course, being Kaz and Inej, their faces were expressionless.

"You guys need something?" Kaz asked with a annoyed voice. Everyone turned around and sent each other smirks.

"Okay, what's the plan?" Jesper asked.

"Being that it is senior year, we need to leave our mark. The plans a little complicated, a little dangerous, but it should definitely work," Kaz explained.

"Okay, so what is it?" Nina asked, getting anxious. Kaz started explaining his plan, bit by bit. By the end of it, everyone only had one expression on their face, surprise.

"This is insane, we all could get seriously hurt, if not die. Kaz, did you really think this through?" Inej asked, clearly doubting Kaz's sanity.

"I thought this through like a thousand times. I know it's risky, but if we do everything right, we should be fine."

"There is nothing right about this plan!" Jesper yelled.

"For the first time ever, I agree with Jes," Nina said.

"We done worse than this, you guys have to trust me," Kaz said, determination spreading across his face.

After a few minutes of silence, Inej spoke up. "Fine, let's do this," she said, still doubting the entire plan. A smirk spreak through Kaz's face. "But," Inej went on, "If something goes wrong, even the tiniest thing, we stop. No questions asked."

"Deal." The group looked at each other, not knowing what they're getting into.
