"Jamie, he is not my type." Vanessa groans for what feels like the fifth time. We were huddled into one of Vanessa's favorite coffee shops.
It was our second day here and Vanessa had woken up bright and early, excited to show me around her hometown. She bounced around in the car as we drove around. She dove towards the window to point out statues, buildings and even gave out random tidbits of information about the town.
Vanessa wanted me to see it all and I was willing. One of the first stops had been to Vanessa's favorite tiny bookshop, she had taken me to a small food stall on the side of the road that served delicious waffles before turning us around to get coffee. From there we had only been sitting down for a few minutes when I noticed the bartender throwing looks over at Vanessa.
I brought it to her attention and she waved it away before claiming, "He has a crush on me. For a few weeks, he would try to slip his number to me," Before blowing into her coffee.
I had gaped at her admission before drilling her with questions. Did they date? No. Did she find him annoying? Not really. Was he her type? This was received with just a shrug.
That had started the entire game I had created for myself called, Point out Vanessa type in Men. So far I had crossed jocks, cowboys, and what seemed like a teacher running late, off the list.
Every time I pointed out another man, Vanessa would just shake her head before going back to enjoying the noises of the street.
"What is your type then," I ask as she leans back and sips her coffee, She laughs lightly before letting her face rest in the sunlight. "I'm trying to be a good girlfriend and find you a boyfriend," I tease her.
Her head tilts to the side as she all but gapes at me, "Jamie. I don't need my girlfriend as a wing woman,"
I pout at her, looking put out, "Would you prefer Blair? That's cold, "I take a sip at my tea, feigning hurt.
"I don't need a wing woman at all," She laughs as she leans onto the table, "I have you and that's good enough for now," She reaches out and grabs my hand in between hers. Her fingers are cold because we are sitting outside.
"For now," I exclaim at her, throwing my napkin at her. Vanessa laughs again, unbothered by my attempts to find her dream man. I shake my head a bit before turning to look towards the increasingly busy street. It seemed like this was a hot spot for the town.
We people watch for a few minutes, Vanessa actively ignoring any more men I point out to her. I feel the coffee I was drinking begin to settle into my stomach and I know that Vanessa has the idea of dragging me all around her town, so who knows the next time I'll be able to find a bathroom.
I stand to go to the bathroom, waving Vanessa back into her seat when she stands to join me. I make my way quickly through the little coffee shop. I do my business and I stop to take in the decoration of the coffee shop. It is very cowboy. I didn't know the south liked farmers that much and it boggles my mind a bit.
I round the corner and head for the doors when I see Vanessa and she has been joined by a girl. I stand and watch for a few seconds as she clearly is excited to talk to her. For a few seconds, I'm stuck in my spot as I take in every expression that flies across both their faces and I don't know if Vanessa will notice me walk up to her. She's entranced by this girl.
She is a tall leggy blonde. She wears workout clothes, signally she's a health nut to be exercising this early in the morning. Her hair is up in a messy bun and she's smiling widely at Vanessa, reaching over and dragging her into a long hug.
Before I walk over there are memory resources through my brain, a picture on Vanessa's dresser of this very girl. The jingling bell over the door announces my presence and two pairs of eyes turn towards me. I make my way to them, pretending that I hadn't been lightly spying on them for a few minutes, smiling wide as all their eyes fall onto me. Vanessa beckons me over, her eyes sparkling.
