You couldn't see anything. All you could smell was smoke and your mothers perfume as she held you to her chest so you couldn't see anything going around you. Even though you insisted you were old enough she carried you through the city. You had tried to argue with saying you could walk, but one step out the front door when the smell of rotting flesh hit your nostrils had you crawling back into your moms arms. Something was wrong, very wrong.
"Okay baby we're almost there." Your mom cooed in your ear.
"Where are we going?" I asked raising my head a little. Our city was burning, smoke and fire climbed into the night sky. Helicopters and gun shots cutting through the screams.
"Somewhere safe hopefully." She said as she set you down. She smiled bending slightly so she was eye level with you. "Listen to me (Y/N). Whatever happens, I love you so much. You are my pride and joy. If something happens to me you run. Don't trust anyone." Your mom advised sternly as you approached the guards waiting a few feet away, guns pointed at you and spotlights shining on you. They hurt your eyes from being shrouded in nighttime and smoke. Your mom held onto your hand tightly in fear, you felt her slip a knife down your sleeve. The cool metal handle sliding across your skin gave you goosebumps.
"State your names." One of the guards barked as we approached. "Hands on your heads."
"I'm (M/N) (L/N) and this is my daughter (Y/N)." Your mom explained placing her hands on her head.  One of the guards approached with a scanner. Tears pricked your eyes as you stared at the barrels of their guns. He scanned you and a green light blinked out of the scanner. Then he pointed it at your mom, the second the light blinked red she was shot. Blood spattered across your arms and face, you turned to look at her. You couldn't hear anything over the ringing in your ears. The soldiers began to shout at you not to move. The one with the scanner grabbed your arm and you just stared at him with empty eyes before slipping the knife down your sleeve and into your palm. You'd never killed someone before, had never wanted to. But that didn't stop you from driving the knife into his neck and sprinting away.  All you could hear was a high pitched ringing and more gunshots. As you weaved in and out of the woods that lined the path you could hear a little better.
If anything happens to me run.
So you did just that.

•One year later•

It's been lonely. You had spent the last year surviving, trading, you lived by your moms last words to you. You didn't trust anyone, you didn't stay anywhere very long. Today you were moving through Boston, the last surviving QZ. The sight of the city made you frown. Those tall building creeping up into the clouds, gunshots and screams filling the city. You hated big cities. Sneaking through buildings, you were just here to loot around and then leave as quickly as possible.
"Fuck that I'm not going with him." A young girl exclaimed from nearby. You crouched down, the last thing you needed was for the military or the fireflies to find you here.
"Ellie. This is your only chance. You have to go with Joel, I trust him and Tess to take care of you." A woman calmed her. You peaked around the broken down car you had hidden behind. Fireflies and it looked to be two stragglers. Arguing over a girl about your age. Despite the tug of sympathy in your gut for the girl you kept moving. A twig snapped underneath your feet. You looked up to see a pair of green eyes widen at the sight of you.
"Fuck." You swore putting your finger to your lips praying she'd feel that same tug of sympathy for you. After all you were just a teenage girl like her.
"Marlene.." Her eyes never left yours. "I'll go." She decided. Ellie seemed smart enough, maybe someday you'd see her again. She seemed important enough that the fireflies would keep her alive. You moved swiftly and more carefully as you went to exit the city through the old trails the smugglers used. You'd been to Boston one other time, and you remembered it. The east coast was where you had stayed the last year. Traveling up and down the coast but this year you wanted to see more. You had a map you stole from a gas station ready as you snuck out of the city, and you made your way west.
