Idaho pt.3

Ellie's P.O.V
I woke up to birds singing and the morning sun shining through the window into my eyes making me groan. I rolled over reaching for (YN), longing for her warmth. When my hands only reached blankets, cold blankets, I shot awake.
"(YN)?" I called into the abandoned home on the outskirts of town we were going to spend today hunting through. However looking around, she wasn't here. Panic surged through me as I began to search the house, my gun in my hand as I cleared each room. (YN) wouldn't have left me here alone, in the middle of Idaho. I opened the garage letting loose a breath, Atlas was still here. (YN) insisted on them staying in the home with us instead of the backyard. It made her uneasy leaving them out in the open.
I flung open the front door ready to storm the town looking for her. When I walked into the streets, there she was. Grinning at me from ear to ear, holding her backpack straps as she skipped towards me. The sun glinting off her hair and it swayed with her movements, this was lightest I'd seen her eyes in about a month. Absolutely breathtaking.
"Hi gorgeous." (YN) grinned, wrapping her arms around my neck and pulling me into a soft morning kiss.
"Where were you?" I inquired sternly. She groaned at my serious tone stepping away from me with a pout.
"Getting breakfast you worry wart." (YN) said excitedly, grabbing my hand and pulling me back inside the house.
"Alone? (YN) next time you want venture out alone at least wake me up before you go missing." I sighed. She was going to have to learn how to be a team player, I knew she could handle herself but part of me hated that I wasn't out there with her. Helping her and joking with her as she told me stories.
"Don't you want to know what I got?" She asked. Any grip on my fear and anger vanished.
"You're lucky you're so damn cute." I rolled my eyes at her. She pushed my lightly before setting her backpack on the table.
When (YN) emptied her pack out I couldn't hold in the gasp. Random items and food scattered across the table, among the random items a sketchbook.
"Where did you find this?" I breathed, the leather bound book was finely crafted. And the thing that made it just a bit harder to breathe, an E imprinted in the cover.
"There's uh. There's a house around here, mostly gated off and boarded up. But there's a side building in the back I think used to be an art studio." (YN) scratched the back of her neck, her cheeks turning rosey as I watched her.
     "I love you."
"I love you too. Now let's go!"

The town was quiet, too quiet. I didn't want to ruin (YN)'s day though. I'm sure there wasn't anything out here we couldn't handle. It was like watching a child on vacation, she rode Atlas through the town like we were the only people in the world.
"(YN)?" I called, she was starting to go just a little too far away. She turned to me and shook her head, holding out her hand to stop me. She hopped off Atlas, taking out her gun. I didn't yield her warning jumping off and silently jogging to catch up with her.
Gun shots made me jog a bit faster.
"Run Ellie!" (YN) screamed. As I rounded the corner into the alleyway. She ran out of an old cafe and I saw the five infected running after her. I shot one, grabbing her hand and yanking her along with me.
I paused to help her up into Atlas' saddle despite her protests. I wasn't going to risk her. Adrenaline rushed through my veins as I hoisted her up, but one of the runners caught my shoulder dragging me to the ground. I dropped (YN) in the process, I gritted my teeth grappling with the creature hoping for (YN) to shoot it. My hand slipped and the creatures snapping jaws latched onto my shoulder. My scream echoed through the town, followed by the gunshot I had been waiting for.
(YN) grabbed me pulling me to my feet, fear clear in those (EC) orbs. I picked my gun up from the ground dreading the conversation we were about to have. We cleared the remaining runners, tears falling down her cheeks, staining her beautiful face.
     "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I just froze and I couldn't. I just-"
     "(YN) baby stop."
"You got bit! And it's all my fault. Ellie I-" (YN) was beginning to hyperventilate as she stared at my new bite, blood ruining the shirt she had lent me.
"(YN) look into my eyes. I need you to take a deep breath." I inhaled to show her, she follow suite. I exhaled slowly, but it didn't stop the tears pouring from her eyes.
"Ellie. I can't lose you, but I can't let you become a monster either." (YN)'s bottom lip shook.
"We have to talk. Preferably not here, please." I begged. Maybe it was the fact she thought I was going to die, but she nodded and followed me. She helped me up into Shimmer, worry and fear clouding her eyes as she walked back to Atlas.
When we got to the home we had stayed in previously (YN) followed behind me, shutting and locking the door. I tensed as I heard her click the safety off her gun. I turned to stare down the barrel of her gun, her hand shaking as she pointed it at me.
"Don't make me do this Ellie." (YN) sobbed through her teeth. I swallowed slowly putting my hands in the air.
"Don't shoot please. I'm not infected." I tried. (YN)'s mouth pressed into a line.
"Don't lie to me Ellie. You never were a liar." (YN) snarled at me. My hands shook as I took in the flash of anger in those eyes, those eyes that I had spent so long sketching and staring into.
"I'm not lying. My tattoo, remember when I told you it was covering a chemical burn? I burned myself to cover a bite I got years ago." I explained quickly, tears threatening to spill over.
"No. You would've told me if you were immune. You would've told me. We don't do secrets Ellie." (YN)'s hands shook as she put her finger on the trigger. I began to sob as I snatched the gun from her hand quickly.
"That day in Boston when you saw me, Joel was transporting me for the fireflies because I'm immune. They thought they could make a cure from me." I raised my voice, but it cracked as I realized that (YN) was furious. Her rage and tears clear in her face.
"You kept this from me. I thought we trusted each other?" (YN) yelled taking her gun back from me. She stuffed into her waistband and then wiped her tears away.
      "I'm sorry." I cried.
"We're going back to Jackson. Tomorrow. I think I need time away from you. Time to think." She sniffled, running her hand through her hair walking away from me.
"(YN) come back." I begged, if she left me I'm not sure if I could take it. My heart broke as she turned and looked at me.
"I don't do secrets. Not even with you, no matter how much I love you." And then she walked upstairs into one of the bedrooms to stay in until we left tomorrow. I couldn't help but think that maybe I had ruined the best possible thing I have.
