"Odette," I hear a sweet voice say my sister's name. I hear it several more times before a gentle shake rustles me awake. I rub my eyes open and see Aurelia standing by my bed. I'm surprised for a minute before everything rushes back to me.She has a look of pity on her face when she apologizes. "I didn't want to wake you, but it's time for supper." "Already?" I ask, before rising up. I slept for that long? It was supposed to be a short nap.
"Thank you for waking me," I tell Aurelia. "Yeah, of course. We're roommates now," she beams. Her smile is so contagious that I can't even be mad at myself for waking up late. "We can walk together to the dining hall," Aurelia says, walking to the door. Macy was right. It seems that I am on the right track to making my first friend.
I slip into my sneakers and say, "Oh no," suddenly realizing something. "What is it?" Aurelia asks, concerned. I look at her and ask, "Don't I need to change into the uniform?" "Nah, I'm sure it'll be fine," she shrugs it off. "It's your first day." "Okay," I say, trusting her.
Aurelia opens the door, revealing the source of the loud chatter. I watch as girls pass by our room as they head to the dining hall. "Come on," Aurelia says, stepping into the hallway. I follow beside her as we walk.
"So," Aurelia says, looking at me. "Let's get to know each other." "Yeah," I nervously say. I would love to get to know Aurelia better but right now I'm concerned about my attire. A sweatshirt with leggings is hardly the type of clothing a prestigious private school would approve of. Not only that but I notice a few girls sneaking peaks at me. It's going to be hard not to stand out now.
"Where are you from?" Aurelia asks. "Well, I'm from the States," I answer. "Specifically, Pennsylvania." "Hey, that's cool." "Not really," I laugh. "I think it's cool," she says. "You've lived there your entire life, but I have never even visited so to me it's cool." "I guess that's a good point," I say after thinking about it.
"So, where are you from?" "Take a guess," Aurelia challenges me. "Could I at least have a hint to start me off?" "Well, I'm from the States too, only I'm towards the west." "California," I immediately guess. "The hint gave it away!" Aurelia laughs.
I notice a girl giving me the side-eye, with a smug smile on her face. "She's not looking at you," Aurelia whispers to me. "Huh," I say, a bit shaken. Aurelia says, "She just has a nasty eye," her smile now a frown. I know what she means. There always has to be someone who always has a problem with everyone. Hopefully, the most this girl does is give dirty looks.
"Stairs or elevator?" Aurelia asks. I look at the girls waking down the staircase while a few groups wait for the elevator. "Stairs," I say, thinking my thoughts from earlier. Aurelia nods.
"Do you have your schedule?" "Yeah." "All of the seniors take the same classes so it's a real possibility that we could have the exact same schedule." "I'm hoping so," I admit. "This school is so big; it'll nearly take me a month to find my way around it." "I don't blame you," Aurelia says. "But I can always help you find out way," she smiles, showing me it's alright.
