13: My Love Is Steady

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. That's my motto for the day.

Today is Zayn's hearing. I was forced to go to school. My mother wouldn't let me go with him. She said it would be too much for me. She's probably right, but I still wanted to go. Andy got to go, so why couldn't I go? It's completely unfair.

"Girl, would you sit still?" Aston says, chuckling at me.

I look over at him and then down at my legs. I stop them from jumping and frown. "I'm just nervous," I tell him quietly.

He frowns. "He is going to be fine, you'll see." All day, he's been trying to make me feel better, but it hasn't helped. I really don't think anything will. Aston sighs and moves to sit next to me. "Just five more minutes," he tells me, pointing to the clock on the wall of the classroom.

I sigh heavily and rest my head on the cold desk. "I want to go home," I mutter. I feel somebody start massaging my shoulders. I don't bother looking to see who it is.

"She's all depressed," Aston tells somebody.

"Babe, he's gonna be fine," I hear Max say from behind me.

I look up at him and he smiles down at me. "Why is this the only time you're nice to me?"

He smirks. "I'm nice to you all the time. You just don't notice."

I roll my eyes. "Do you know what would be nice?"

"What?"

"For you to turn back time, so that I was never even born," I grumble bitterly.

Max chuckles and sits to my left. "I wouldn't be able to do that even if I wanted to."

I sigh and check the time. One minutes until I can go. I start fidgeting again and Aston shakes his head.

“Are you driving home?” He asks.

I shake my head. “Andy is suppose to pick me up.” With my words, the bell goes off, along with my phone.

I search my bag and answer. “Are you here?” I ask my brother quickly.

Max laughs, shaking his head as the three of us walk to my locker.

“I’m still at the courthouse. I sent Liam to pick you up. He said he’ll drive you over here,” he tells me.

I groan and open my locker. I hold my phone between my face and shoulder as I put my things away. “Is he here?” I ask.

“He should be,” he says. “Listen, I have to go do things. Call me if anything. Bye,” he tells me before hanging up.

I sigh and grab my jacket. I shove my phone in my back pocket and put my jacket on.

Aston is leaning against the lockers, fixing his beanie, while Max watches me with amusement.

“You look like you’re going to kill somebody,” he tells me, crossing his arms over his chest.

“My brother,” I mutter. “He had his friend come get me.” I sigh and put my bag over my shoulder. “He’s taking me to wherever the hell they are.”

“So you’re going to see Zayn?” Aston asks.

I shrug. “Hopefully. I’ll tell you guys what happens.” I smile at him and hug him then Max. “See you guys next year,” I joke. They laugh as we walk out of the building.

“Tell me if anything goes wrong, okay?” Aston says seriously.

I nod. “I will.”

“And stay out of trouble,” Max tells me. “You wouldn’t believe the heart attack I had when I saw you on the news. I thought I lost my favorite sex buddy.”
