"Is that supposed to be a bird?"
Taehyung leaned closer to inspect my poor excuse of a blue jay. I looked away to hide the embarrassment. "I know it's ugly, so don't say anything else." Taehyung stifled a laugh and sat beside me. "Just adjust the crooked wing and you'll be set."
"Janice Yoo couldn't fix this mess and you expect me to?"
"Just hold this paintbrush and follow me."
I nervously hovered over the bird's wing with my paintbrush. "...Now what?", I asked. Without a word, Taehyung's warm hand was now on mine. "Use this darker shade to add some depth." He directed my hand across the wing and I couldn't help but stare at him. Taehyung continued giving pointers but my mind was too preoccupied with the current situation.
What is he doing?
Taehyung finally let go. "There.", he said. "It looks a bit better, right?" The bird looked significantly better but that wasn't my concern anymore. I looked down at my hand feeling confused. "Is everything alright?" Taehyung looked at me with concern but I reassured him. "I-I'm fine. Just amazed how you were able to fix it."
Taehyung didn't buy my lie but didn't press the subject further. I'm grateful he didn't. "Look I'm thankful you joined the club to help me.", he said. "But if you don't want to work on the mural, you have every right to leave."
"I made a promise to help you, right? I'm not leaving."
"...Alright fine.", he said. "Then can I ask a favor?" Taehyung scanned his surroundings and whispered. "I wanted to ask Miyeon out on a date but I have no idea what to do." He looked down and sighed. "And it's obvious I haven't been on one."
"So then what's the favor?"
"...Maybe you can show me how a date goes?"
"What? ...You mean like you and I... go on a date?"
"It wouldn't be for real... Just show me what I'm supposed to do."
"...I don't know..."
"Please, Byul."
I hesitated. A pretend date? I looked into Taehyung's pleading eyes. "I want to get a little comfortable before the real deal.", he said. "It sounds stupid, I know."
"Will a pretend date really be helpful though? All you have to do is be yourself."
"I don't know why but it's so hard being around Miyeon. I get nervous and can barely talk."
"...Do you like her that much?"
Taehyung nodded and I sighed. "Alright, fine.", I said in defeat. "I can help you." Taehyung's smile beamed and uneasiness fell over me. ...Is this really a good idea?
_______
"Taehyung is this why you refused to work today?"
A short woman with curly hair excitedly handed me a menu. "Am I finally meeting the girl you've been gushing about nonstop?" Taehyung looked at me apologetically. "She's not, mom...", he said. Taehyung's mom placed two glasses of water on the table. "Well girlfriend or not, welcome to our restaurant!"
