I opened my eyes to a loud banging at the door.
Sian hesitantly opened it and my step-mom's assistant rushed in. "You two aren't dressed yet?" Sian rubbed his eyes as Yeonhee scrolled through her phone. "You're both scheduled to meet your parents at the charity auction.", she continued. "And after, there'll be a banquet and press to take your pictures."
I closed my eyes and tried blocking the sound of her nagging. I suddenly heard two claps beside my ear, and opened my eyes to see Yeonhee hovering over me. "I won't be ignored, Byul." Sian silently chuckled and I forced myself to sit up.
"Is it necessary for you to be intruding on our personal space?" Yeonhee scoffed and continued to stare at her phone. "Your mother asked that I keep tabs starting now." My step-mom had many assistants and Yeonhee was one of the few I really disliked. She pushed up her glasses before catching me stare at her in disdain.
"Is there a reason you're still in bed?", she asked. Yeonhee narrowed her eyes at me so I did the same. I refused to budge and she grew irritated. Sian cut in before I got really heated. "I think I can handle it from here.", he said. "Just tell Byul's parents we'll be there in an hour."
He ushered Yeonhee to the door but she refused. "I find it hard to trust someone who constantly fails at responsibility." She glanced at me and I rolled my eyes. "I promise we'll be there on time.", he said. Sian's sincerity must've been convincing enough because she finally left. He shut the door and turned to me with a disappointed expression.
"One day.", he said. "I'm asking for one day where you behave." I finally got out of bed and headed to the bathroom. "She pushed my buttons.", I said squeezing toothpaste on my toothbrush. "Just like everyone else in this family."
"Would it kill you to just go with the flow?"
"I try to do that. But there comes a point where lying to yourself will just drive you even crazier."
Sian stayed silent for a moment.
"What? No response?"
"...I'm not saying you're wrong. If anything you're absolutely right."
_______We set off to the charity auction but something felt off as we reached our destination. Sian parked in a field and I stared at the endless rows of mandarin orange trees. The citrus aroma smelled amazing and I watched as families walked by with baskets full of oranges.
Sian handed me a scarf and basket. "Why are we here?", I asked in confusion. Sian shrugged. "I felt like we needed to enjoy the island."
"What about the auction?"
"What about it?"
I laughed mostly out of shock. This was unlike Sian but he genuinely seemed excited to relax in Jeju. "You're pulling a me, and I don't like it.", I said. Sian stepped out of the car and opened my passenger door. "We're in Jeju. Might as well enjoy it."
"You know Yeonhee's gonna be pissed.", I replied. "I can handle my parents being angry, but can you?" Sian sighed. "At this point, I don't really care.", he said. "Don't we both need a break from all the crazy?" Sian wasn't wrong. I couldn't help but feel nervous at the later consequences but seeing Sian so excited changed my mind.
______
"Did you hear? Byul's engaged."
"She is? To who? Soobin?"
"They broke up a while ago. Apparently, she cheated on him."
"Poor guy... And now she's engaged? What a whore."
