After the eventful night with the hooded figure who had broken into their home, Evie and Henry had been on edge. "I hate this. I absolutely hate this!" Evie said as she was just sitting on the couch holding a sleeping Ember. "Why do people keep coming after us? What did we do?!" Tears began falling down Evie's face as Mal went rushing over to her.
Mal was over at Evie's house because while Henry was at work because Evie didn't feel safe all by herself in her own house anymore. "It's okay E. Everything's okay. They're gone. And as long as I'm here, no one is going to hurt you or Ember." Mal told her.
"What if Ginny's back and is trying to hurt us again?" Evie asked.
"Evie, Ginny's still on the isle, she can't get to you."
"Well then who is the one that broke in here?!" Evie asked making Ember stir a little and fuss. "I'm sorry, honey. Ssh, go back to sleep." Evie and Henry had told Ben about what had happened putting it in the news to see if anybody had ever seen the hooded figure before. "Mal, I'm worried. What if they're after Ember? I can't go through this again."
Mal sighed as she wrapped her arms around her friend. "Evie, you don't know for sure if they're after Ember."
"Then what do they want?! I can't even keep my own daughter safe. They could've gotten to her Mal. And if they did, I wouldn't have been able to stop them." Evie cried as she hugged Ember closer to her.
"Hey, but they didn't get to Ember. She's fine." Mal told her crying best friend.
Evie leaned into her as she calmed herself down before she went to go put a sleeping Ember in her crib. She gently kissed her forehead and then left the door open a crack and went back downstairs. Evie sighed as she sat back down on the couch next to Mal.
But just then, a knock was heard at the door. Evie glanced over at Mal, unsure if she should open it or not. But she ultimately decided to go ahead and open it. And when she did, she saw it was Doug. She sighed in relief.
"It's only you." She said more to herself.
"Hi Evie, I heard about the break in. How are you doing?" He asked her.
"A little shaken up. I'm more worried about Ember though. I don't know if they came for Ember or something else." Evie told him honestly as he nodded in response.
"What are you doing here?" Mal asked appearing behind Evie.
"I was just here to check on Evie." Doug told her.
Evie was about to say something else to Doug, but before she could, Ember could be heard crying in the nursery. "I'll be right back." Evie said going up the stairs to get her daughter.
And as she did so, Doug entered the house as Mal continued to glare at him. "Why are you really here, Doug?" She asked him as she crossed her arms at him.
"I told you, to make sure Evie was okay." He replied.
"That's why I'm here." Mal informed him.
Doug just narrowed his eyes at Mal who narrowed hers right back at him. And as they continued to stare each other down, Evie came back holding Ember as she saw the two of them staring hard at each other, and Evie could just feel all the hate just hanging in the air, circling around them.
"What's going on?" Evie asked them.
"I think Doug has overstayed his welcome." Mal said not breaking eye contact with the dwarf.
"I haven't even been here for five minutes!" Doug replied. "All I came here for was to make sure Evie was okay."
"And you did! She's fine! Now you can go!" Mal yelled.
Doug looked over at Evie with a look in his eyes that asked her if she really wanted him to leave. Evie let out a breath as she looked back at him. "Doug, I'm okay. I promise. You can leave now." She told him. Doug sent Mal another glare as she smirked proudly happy that she had gotten her way and won. "Ok, what happened?"
"Isn't it a little suspicious how he just came here like he did?" Mal asked.
Evie rolled her eyes at her as she closed the front door as Doug had left it open. "Mal, come on. I may not like him either, but all he came to make sure I was okay."
"But Evie, you just can't be too careful anymore. You don't know who that hooded figure was, it could be anybody!" Mal yelled.
"So you think Doug is the one in the hoodie?" Evie asked.
"Well, who knows?"
"Mal, unless you have actual proof he was the one in the hoodie, don't blame him!" Evie told her just as the doorbell rang.
"Oh great! He's back!" Mal said sarcastically. Evie sent her a warning glare as she went to open the door. She didn't see anybody which was weird. But then she looked down and saw a vase with blue roses inside and a note sticking out. She picked it up and read the note. "What is that?" Evie's heart began beating rapidly as she read what was on the note. She looked up to see if she could see anyone. But once again, there was nothing. She then shut the door and locked it swiftly. "Evie, seriously. What is that? You're scaring me."
Still, Evie didn't say anything, she just handed Mal the note. And Mal opened it and read it as her eyes widened. She could feel herself start breathing heavily. On the note it read,
'I'm watching you.'
Evie hugged Ember closer to her. She didn't know who it was from, but she knew that the person in the hoodie was the one who gave it to her. She looked at Mal with fear in her eyes, and Mal looked right back at her with the same look. They knew it was only a matter of time before the hooded figure came back to strike again. And that only scared them more.
