the odd shephard out

The chiefs office was filled with what seemed to be every department head and the shephard siblings.

"I have asked Doctor Webber to lead the meeting as i cant. I am Isabella's brother, realistically i can't be chief i am to emotionally involved. Richard over to you" Derek opened the meeting explaing his role to play he then took a seat inbetween mark and Amelia as Richard took his seat behind the desk, feeling right at home.

"We are here to discuss the medical care for Isabella May Shephard. I am  going to ask each of the doctors to present Isabella's diagnosis then we will discuss future medical care" Richard started the meeting. "Doctor Bailey"

"Isabella came in with low oxygen levels, chest CT showed that there was blood in her lungs due to a puncture from a shard of glass, we placed in a chest tube which   didnt drain all of the blood so we had to go in surgically to drain it we found that the glass had punctured her lung in 2 places so we sealed up both puncture area and removed glass that was embedded in the lung. Her oxygen levels then increased then 2 weeks ago her breathing was becoming very shallow and fast, she had pneumonia which was due to the infection from her foot  so we had to intubate with a ventilator which is still in, the pneumonia is under control and hopefully when she wakes we will hopefully be able to remove the ventilator" Doctor Bailey explained

"Thank you Doctor Bailey. Doctor Torres" Webber said moving on.

"So umm Isabella came in with debris from the car door in her foot we removed it to find that her the wound was infected. We were unable to treat the infection which started to spread, causing a high temperature and she started to go in sepsis so we amputated below her knee. The incision site is healed and the infection is gone." Doctor Torres explained.

"Thank you Doctor Torres. Doctor Altman?" Doctor Webber moved on.

"Isabella had coded twice in the ambulance then coded once in the trauma room but it took us 4 rounds of compressions and using the defibrillator to bring her back this was caused by a rupture in the aortic valve, in surgery we performed a valve replacement which was successful and her heart is back to normal" Doctor Altman explained the treatment they gave the young Shephard.

"Doctor Shephard" Richard said prompting Amelia.

"Yes" all 5 shephards answered as they were all use to being called doctor shephard.
"Doctor Amelia Shephard" Ricard reiterated

"So umm Isabella came in with a umm what was it, oh yes with a, im sorry I find this all so funny the one Shephard who didn't want to be a doctor like the rest of us ends up in surgery anyway but shes thebone on the table. Don't you think its funny" Amelia laughed, she was finding this all to overwhelming listening to the reasons why her younger sister was laying in a hospital bed in a coma, unable to breath for herself and she had to help her siblings make the right decision for the future care they may give Isabella.

"Are you serious right now" Nancy sneered.
"Trust her to go crazy right now" Liz added
"Are you surprised?" Kathleen snided.

"Just take a breath" Derek whispered as Amelia did as she was told but she still wasnt ready to lead this heart breaking conversation.
"Derek i cant do this, take over" Amelia begged.
"Youve got this"
"I really dont"

"Just take over derek. You know what happened as much as Amelia does" the three older Shephard spat.

"Derek?" Richard
Before derek could ramble off everything that happened to Isabella he needed to take a breath before he became Doctor Shephard, he just needed to be Isabellas older brother for one more second, he closed his eyes picturung his little sister hooked up too all the wires and tubes, keeping her alive. He was ready to save his little sisters life as much as he could.
To himself he said 'Today is a beautiful day to save lives'.
