If you click on the image above it shows a elixir and gold storage and collector. The collector produces elixir/gold in a certain amount of time. (You can click on it and click info and it will tell you how long it takes... because it depends on the level.) Im guessing the one above is about a level 10? Anyway the gold/elixir storage is pretty obvious. It just stores your elixir and gold. (Gold and elixir are also known as loot.)
-What do I do with my Gold and Elixir and how do I get them?-
You use gold and elixir to upgrade everything on your base! Also you use elixir to train troops to get loot! (Every Time you upgrade it makes the thing a higher level... The higher the level the better it is!) And you get elixir and gold by attacking in multiplayer, attacking the goblins, or using your attacks in clan war.
