My lips were still tingling from Piper's brief kiss, but, due to unfortunate circumstances, I didn't have the time to focus on that. My new subject was finding and saving Ian Myers. I didn't have much of an idea of who this man was, but I was hellbent on uncovering his mystery. Plus, it wouldn't help to get on Pipe's good side by providing her a good story.
She had already grabbed my hand and was pulling me back down the Overseer's staircase. She was rattling off ideas and theories she said, her brown eyes practically set alight with inspiration and excitement. I was distracted by her raw emotion for a brief moment, but I remembered that I was the logical one in this relationship... despite how hot Piper may look.
"Piper!" I whisper-shouted, "You have to calm down. We don't know anything about Ian, what he is, or if there are more of those Parasites around. I want to keep us both safe, so, please, try and ground yourself."
Piper looked down at me and signed dejectedly. "I know, I know," she muttered, "I forget you're not invincible sometimes."
"Invincible?"
"Well, not one have I died under your care!"
"Piper - Ugh, just forget it," I deadpanned, blankly staring at the ever so ditsy reporter, "We need to start by trying to find a lab. It might tell us if there's more parasites and/or if there's a way to save Ian."
Piper gave me an affirmative nod, half smiling at me. She latched onto my wrist and pulled the Pipboy up so it was before us. She leaned around my body, making it so I could feel almost every nook and cranny of her physique against mine. Her slim fingers went to work on locating the local map on the display and placing a marker to the labs. I was too stunned to do a thing, much less process what she had done.
"Ninety eight units away!" Piper grinned, her warm body leaving mine.
"W-wha... Oh. Oh yes! Ninety eight units!" The cogs in my brain finally began to turn again. Off to the labs we went, though I did find myself wishing Piper could've stayed against me a moment longer.
We navigated down the winding halls and finally were met with the laboratory door. A small bit of fear and doubt clung to me as I was staring down the door. What could lie beyond here? One of humanity's many grotesque secrets? More parasites? Nothing at all?
Piper strolled before me and pushed open the door without a shred of hesitation, leaving me gasping and stuttering meaningless sentences as I pointed at the door she opened. "Oh shit!" she swore, frantically flying back out the door she just emerged from, "That's not human!"
Initially, the phrase not human didn't frighten me. I mean, it's the Commonwealth. Nothing here is really human, but when I remembered the context of the situation we were in, I began to panic. Not human likely meant it was a parasite! Or a failed splice! Or... Ian!
Thankfully, my instincts of surviving the Wastes for so long kicked in. I drew my gun and pointed it at the black void that the vibrant Piper had just emerged from moments ago. I heard faint growling and hissing, but it didn't sound... aggressive? It was hard to tell.
I turned on the light of my Pipboy and shined it into the room, flashing the very creature Piper had been screaming about moments ago. What appeared to be a mount of melted black tar was looming in front of me. It was dripping whatever it was made of on the floor around itself, leaving a putrid smell around the room.
"Y-You're right!" I stammered, "Definitely n-not human."
The creature jerked its head to where I was standing in the doorway, slowly beginning its gooified approach towards me. What resembled a head began to horizontally split down the middle, revealing rows upon rows of teeth jammed within its mouth.
