p.s.: SPOILERS! this isn't a big one... it just talks about the events of curie's affinity quest.

Curie was always my favorite companion to travel with. She differed from the humans I'd met along my adventures in the Commonwealth. She was helpful, calm, collected, but most of all, she was concise. Humans were often unpredictable and unintelligent. Curie knew just about everything there was to know about everything, so she could entertain my intense conversations about the world wars or animals that interested me. She understood me.

Whenever I'd feel withdrawn and shy, she would just ask me a mindless question about something to do with animals or my old combat practices. We had a routine going; I'd wake up, avoid the other people at Sanctuary, find Curie, and then head out on whatever task I had that day.

However... today Curie wanted to change that routine.

She revealed to me that she wanted to become 'human.' I, of course, didn't say no to her when she requested it, but I didn't exactly say yes. And now, I found myself staring at the ground on the way to the Memory Den. I heard Curie's usually calming mechanical whirs, and it felt like it was drilling into my head.

I squeezed my eyes shut, wringing out my hands. I tried to close it out, but the sound of it was driving me to the edge.

"You seem off, Nate. Would you like me to run a medical exam?" Curie's bold voice inquired.

My mind refocused itself on her calming voice rather than her persistent mechanical noises. I could feel my breath slowing again and my hands stopped their incessant fidgeting. "N-no, Curie. I'm okay."

"If you say so, Nate."

I breathed a short sigh of relief. Curie didn't want to keep talking, thankfully. I wasn't in the mood to chat. My hand dug around into my pocket and was satisfied when I felt the familiar engraved wood against my calloused fingertips. I pulled out my old combat knife, rubbing my fingers over the lettering in the sides.

The knife was something I had before the war. It was a comfort item of sorts. I would keep it on me to feel safe when I felt like the whole world was against me. It made me feel more powerful when I felt like I had the ability to protect my loving wife and child.

The smell of piss and garbage cut into my bittersweet thoughts. Goodneighbor was stood before us.

"Are you ready?" Curie asked. Even though her voice was monotone and robotic, it seemed like there was a hint of excitement in her tone.

"Yeah... let's get this over with," I huffed, dread consuming my body. I was increasingly nervous to speak to Dr. Amari. I hated initiating conversation, and I especially hated asking for things. The endless 'what-if' scenarios flew threw my head at a million miles an hour.

Curie's metallic 'hand' reached out in front of me to open the door. I stepped in, and she followed me through. "That's awfully gentlemanly of you, Curie," I attempted to joke, suddenly feeling anxious that it wouldn't go over well with her.

"Oh, Nate! You're silly," Curie enthused, causing a sheepish smile to spread over my face.

Neighborhood Watch people muttered greetings or jeers in my general direction, but I was quick to hurry away from them. I learned the best way to go about things was to keep my eyes on the ground and speed off from them as fast as I could.
