Amia
“Well Leo, today is the day that I finally go to earth to begin my training.” I said letting out a shaky breath.
“Cool! I can’t wait to finally see what life on earth is like!” Leo exclaimed as he squirmed in my arms eager to get to earth.
I tightened my grip on his small frame as I turned to look back at the door that led back to the cupid world- back to home.
“We could turn back if you don’t feel like going, I’d understand if you don’t want to.”
I turned my head back toward Leo and smiled down at him. “No matter how much I want to run back home and hide in my lab you know I can’t,” I balanced Leo on my left arm as I dug through my jacket pocket for the key “because if I go back home now I would have to wait ten years before I can get another chance to go to earth again, and by then it will be too late for the human girl to get her soul mate.”
I pulled the silver key out my pocket and held it out in front of me, and with last sigh I turned the key clockwise. As the key faded and the portal to the human world began to materialize I heard the soft voice of Alexander, our computerized travel and security system.
“Hello, please present your form of identification.”
His voice was set to sound monotone and neutral but he always tended to have a slight hint of soft and polite undertones in his voice. Despite having a male name, Alex had no gender, he was neither male nor female, but in honor of his creator he asked that we name him Alexander, and that we use male pronouns to address him.
“Hello Alex, identification code Rank A206999206”
“Oh Amia, it’s good to see you again. Is today finally the big day?”
“Yup, from this day on I’ll be on earth helping humans find their soul mates!”
“Congratulations, your parents would be proud, but my sensors show signs of distress. Tell me why do you seem so uneasy?”
“…..I’m a little scared to be so far from home, and I really want to turn around and leave but if I do then she’d miss her chance to find her soul mate. I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if that happened.”
“I see, well I’m afraid I can’t do much for you, but I can say this, good luck.”
“Thank you Alex, goodbye.”
“Farewell.”
I took a deep breath to calm my nerves.
"Okay, I'm ready."
As I stepped through the portal the space around me faded away, and I began to float down to earth.
"Amia, you're flying! Wait, how are you flying?! You haven't completed your training yet,” Leo said as he gawked at me in wonder.
“Yeah I haven’t, I still can’t fly since I don’t have my cupid wings yet, but once a cupid is sent to earth we are automatically sent to the area of our first client. However we aren’t shown what they look like until after we touch the ground.”
“That’s stupid; well what did they tell you about her?”
“Just her sex and her sexual orientation,” I admitted.
“Then how are we supposed to find her,” Leo exclaimed throwing his paws up.
“Well I do have the PDA that Lady Flora gave me; she said that it’ll help me a lot while we’re on earth. Once we land it should give me a profile on the girl.”
Our conversation ended there when we noticed that we were no longer gliding across the sky and were now descending down toward the ground at a slow pace, but suddenly we began to fall towards the ground.
“I know you said that we would get dropped off around our client, but I thought they’d at least land us gently,” Leo shrieked.
“We’re not supposed to be ascending this quickly!”
Leo continued to yell as I tried to compose a spell to protect us from our fall. I quickly cast a bubble spell to allow minimal damage to both us and whatever or whoever we might accidentally hit.
Enclosed within our bubble Leo and I continued to plummet down towards the ground.
