Chapter 8 – End to a Harmony
Back when Van was about five years younger than his present age, he was once fond of playing football with his brother Felix. There was a time when Felix kicked the ball a little bit too hard for Van to bounce it back with his chest. He had two choices, and he had to make up his mind on what to do with the flying ball, ready to assault him anytime. Van could block the ball with his chest, and bounce it back to his brother but at a slower speed, or he could step back a little and prepare his right foot to kick it, and could possibly be a score.
But there was a problem though. Because his alertness was not that enough to prepare his next move, he had no choice but to block it with his chest. And unfortunately, the ball inflicted an almost unbearable pain to Van as the ball collided on his chest.
And he felt the same feeling again. This time he was not playing football anymore, but a game of whoever would stay alive from this never-ending war. And now, her girl, Kate, already lost the game.
“Van.”
He heard the voice which called his name, but Van did not pay attention. About an hour ago, right after Aterius proudly brought the news to him, they all immediately disappeared, letting the town die slowly and painfully on its own. After hearing the news about Kate’s death, his vision became blurry, his heart stopped for a bit. That time the pain was not yet there, but blankness filled up his chest for a while. But right he saw Kristina’s eyes full of guilt for about a fraction of a second before they all disappeared, that was the moment when his chest tightened and prevented him from breathing for a while.
An hour after, here he is, sitting on a rock probably from a destroyed house, gazing at the sky. He was left alone, and the others made themselves busy. After the Heirs vanished, Drake, Sam, and Cailin approached him, giving him comforting words like everything will turn out fine, and they assured Kate’s peaceful departure from the Planet. But those did not help at all. After saying he was fine and pleading them to leave him alone for awhile, he now found himself staring blankly at the night sky.
“Van.”
The voice called his name again. Van knew the person’s already near him, so near that he could hear her fast breathing, probably because of how tired she was by healing the people severely injured because of the surprise assault by the Heirs.
Van bowed his head down. The pain in his chest was now again building up, as he tried to suppress the tears from falling.
“Why am I weak?”
His voice cracked. He covered both his eyes with his palms, trying himself not to cry in front of this girl.
“You’re not.” Jasmine said, her voice as gentle as the cold wind blowing. She put her hand over his, and held it tight as she could, telling him that she’s here no matter what. Van took her hand as well, and gently gripped it, for it’s the thing he needed the most at this time.
“Then why did she die?” This time, Van looked at her, but with blank eyes. He tried not to show any emotions in front of her, but bit by bit, his heart kept on telling him otherwise. “Jasmine, I promised—“
