Suspicious date

I finish putting on my red dress, it was beautiful and went just below my knees. Maybe I was being too fancy but I had to take advantage of a date with Daniel. He was amazing from what I could tell. I walked downstairs and saw him in a suit.

"You look awesome." He tells me. 

"Thanks, you do too." I smile. 

We walk outside and he opens the passenger seat door to his white 2021 Toyota 4 Runner car. 

"Thank you," I say. 

And then we were in the car, we didn't talk all that much, and I mainly just stared at him. I don't think he noticed because he was focused on the road. 

At the coffee shop

We arrive and are taken towards an oak brown small table with white chairs. Daniel pulls the chair out for me and I sit down, this is a nice place. Once we are sat down in our comfy white chairs, I take a look at the menu. Once the waiter arrives, I order a blueberry muffin with flat white coffee. Daniel orders an Iced tea with a salad. Part of me felt like I should've had a bit more to eat but I'd be alright. Once we get our food we start talking. 

"So how's your family?" Daniel asks me. I could tell he was getting nervous around me. 

"They're doing alright, what about yours?"

"They're chill." He responds. 

What do I say? I thought. "So.." I begin talking, "are you into music?" 

"Yeah actually, my mom used to sing a lot." He lowers his voice a bit. 

"Used to?" I ask curiously.

"Well yeah, she got lung cancer a few years ago." He says looking down.

"Oh my gosh, I had no idea I'm so sorry."

"It's alright, she's getting better." 

"Well, it's good that she's getting better." I pause, "do you have any siblings?"

"Yeah, one older brother." He answers. 

"That's cool, is he nice?"

"He's alright. I mean, I don't talk to him often."

"Oh okay." 

We talked for almost an hour, about family, things we like, our personality, childhood, and stuff like that. I really got to see a different side of him, and he seemed like an amazing guy. I did notice one thing in particular, whenever I'd bring up his older brother he seemed like he didn't want to talk about him, it was strange but then again I was an only child so I didn't know full-on relationships with siblings. 

"Then I worked for..." Ring ring, for a second I thought it was my phone but it was his. He looks down at his phone, probably to see who called him. 

"I'll be back." He says. 

"Take your time." I smile. And he sure did, or at least it felt like it. I wondered who he was talking to. I only heard a few words of his, he was trying to keep it a secret, I think. A few minutes later he comes back looking somewhat annoyed. 

"Hey, are you okay?" I ask him. 

"Something came up with the family," he says looking down, I think he's lying for some reason. Why would he lie? He had no reason to, right?

"Oh okay.." I pause, "well I hope everything's okay."

"Yeah, here lemme call an uber for you." He offers.

"No no it's fine, I can get one myself." I requested. 

"You sure?"

"Yeah, I'll be fine." 

"Okay, here's some money." He gives me a 50 dollar bill.

I could tell he felt somewhat bad, but at the same time, it seemed like he was lying somehow. "Trust me Daniel I'm good." I pause, "you already paid for the food, I can afford an uber."

"Okay, well I gotta go, sorry again." He mentions. 

"It's alright."

And then he was off. Just like that. It felt like a split second. I mean what just happened? Surely nothing to be afraid of. It wasn't a girl surely? I hoped it wasn't. I was probably just overreacting. Who was he talking to? And what was he talking about? Maybe I'm just trying to keep myself entertained. I've been undercover for a while, especially in the gang and I'm usually suspicious of everybody. I don't know why my mind stresses over things, for all I know it's a serious family problem and I'm being selfish thinking there's something wrong with me. But that still doesn't answer my question. Dammit, I thought, I should've paid more attention to what or who he was talking about.
