There is a containment unit in space where some defective gems that are part of an experiment are held, the experiment to see if defective gems can be worked into being good gems for working on the surface for Homeworld.
But the experiment was abandoned and the gems at the containment unit were left there under the rulings of their superior gems. The diamonds of higher ranking gems no longer oversee the ruling gems at the unit giving the gems the free range to attack and hurt the defective gems however they want to.
The defective gems work day and night at the unit not knowing how long they were under the ground on the abandoned colony, nor how long it's been since they were thrown there after emerging, or being transferred from another containment unit.
