The debate made him do it

The next day after I have calmed down after hearing the news about my father, I read up on the rest of the newspaper.
There's been a fire in California, a new celebrity marriage and another debate between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.

"Oh god 'Liza. What's your man done now?" I murmur to myself, opening to the page of the story.

Cabinet battle between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton dictates the future of France

On March 3, a cabinet battle took place between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. The cabinet battle dictated whether America provide aid and supplies to our French allies or not.
The two rivals Jefferson and Hamilton have faced off before over Hamilton's plan to assume state's debt and establish a national bank.
President Washington oversaw the debate, listening to each side of the argument.

Jefferson argued that America should give generously to the French, seeing as they helped our country in times of war against the British. He spoke of the treaty between France and America.
Secretary Hamilton however, argued that any supplies that were donated to the French would go to waste. The country is in chaos with no king or queen to lead the people.

The debate became very heated but in the end, Hamilton had Washington convinced not to send supplies to France while they are holding an uprise against the French parliament.

"I am very pleased with the outcome of this debate," said Hamilton afterwards. "I believe that while the French be struggling at the moment, this movement will benefit both America and France in the long term."

Meanwhile, his opponent Jefferson claims "This movement means that the French population will continue to be chaos. It's not only them who will suffer but it is giving America a bad reputation for making promises that they can't keep."

I finish the article with a sigh, imagining both Angelica's and Eliza's views on the debate.

"America should keep its promise." Angelica would say. "If these supplies are going to help the French commoners, then i'm all for it! The French helped us in our time of need. We should return the favour. That Thomas Jefferson has the right idea. As always."

"Well I think Alex had the right idea." Eliza would retort. "We need those supplies for ourselves. For uh... when we go to war with the- the British."
Classic 'Liza. Too wrapped up in her own little world to understand what's going on around her.

Two days later, I'm reading an article on the resignation of Thomas Jefferson in the daily New York Times when there is an outburst of shouting outside.
My instinct is "the British are back" but when I whip back the curtains to reveal the masses of people flooding the streets, I realise that it isn't panic, it's celebration.
People are galloping about grinning from ear to ear, waving the American flag over their heads. It reminds me of the end of war celebrations and I beam.

I throw open the doors of the house. And yell to know one in particular,
"What's going on?!"
I get several different answers.
"George Washington's going home!"
"He's retiring!"
"Washington's not running for president!"
"Some are saying it's the debate between Hamilton and Jefferson that made him do it!"

They're celebrating the Legend that is George Washington. Giving him a proper send off. Saying goodbye to the president who brought peace and prosperity to our country.

I hurry back inside to fetch our American flag and plant it in the soil outside our house, hoping that it won't get stolen before joining the crowd. We whoop and chant and jump around. All dignity forgotten.

The oddest sight occurs as we dance down the street, a man lying on his back and being carried on top of the crowd. As he approaches me, I grab his left leg and push it forward.

Since the manor is uptown in Albany, we won't get to see George Washington making a speech or leading a parade in his honour but this our goodbye to the greatest (and only) president of America.
