A disturbing revelation.

The next day, a leaflet is slid under the door as I'm walking my breakfast over to the kitchen. I put the plate down and pick it up and examine it.
On the front is some official calligraphy reading "the Reynolds pamphlet". Below that is some print that says "from the desk of Alexander Hamilton". I open it curiously and start reading. My eyes gradually get wider with shock, anger and sympathy for my poor sister.

"The charge against me is a connection with a
James Reynolds for purposes of Improper speculation.
My real crime is an amorous connection with his wife for a considerable time with his knowing consent.
I had frequent meetings with her most of them at my own house.
Mrs. Hamilton with our children being absent on a visit to her father had no knowledge of the actions going on inside our house.
I may assure my readers that the affair did stop after my wife and children returned from uptown.
I shall not reveal the name of this woman to spare her the criticism and save her dignity.
She courted me and escorted me to bed and when she had me in a corner that's when Reynold's extorted me for a sordid fee. I paid the man quarterly.
I hope that the citizens of America can look past my poor actions and look past them to the man who has improved our glorious nation.

A. Ham"

"That little $#!?" I exclaim out loud. "How dare he do that to my sister!"
Poor trusting, innocent Eliza.

Hearing my distress, Stephan gets up from the breakfast table and takes the pamphlet out of my hand. His eyes glide over the innocent words on the page while his mouth curves into a frown.

"How can he do this to her?" My voice breaks.

"I don't know," he murmurs. "But your sister deserves so much better."

"She needs my help. I need to reach out to her. And show that $l*t what a mistake he made when decided to sleep with another woman." I add, white hot rage taking over me.

"Ok dear, you could send the letter right after you've finished it. If you're lucky, and run downtown, you'll catch the morning delivery." Stephan encourages me.
I just grunt and stomp up the stairs.

I bang open the door to the study to find a whole lot of creased papers littering the desk. I hurriedly brush them into the drawer so that I have space to write to my family but one letter near the bottom catches my eye.

Dearest Stephan
I was wondering if you were doing anything on March 6? It would be ever so nice to see you again. I'll enter through the back door as usual? Please send a prompt reply whether you would like to spend some time with me in bed.
Your beloved Cornelia

March 6. That's today. "Spend some time with me in bed". Does that mean that.... No. Stephan wouldn't do that to me. Sure, we're not in love but he wouldn't stoop so low as to sleeping with another woman, would he?

I open the drawer and rifle through scraps of crumpled and smudged paper until. Jackpot.

There at the bottom of the drawer is a pile of letters addressed to "my Stephan" from a "Cornelia Paterson".

"To Stephan" the first one reads.
Yesterday was great. Are you sure it's alright with you and your wife and your household for us to be doing this. All the same, I'd love to see you again. Please send a possible date after you receive this.
Sincerely
Cornelia Paterson"

The next one is worse.

"My Stephan
I was wondering if you'd like to come to my house this time. My husband has an important meeting (political stuff) and will be out of the house. I'd love to see you again.
Yours
Cornelia"

I shudder as I read the next few.

"My Stephan.
Are you sure you can trust your house staff to keep our little secret."

"Dear Stephan
You said in your last letter that your wife found blood on the sheets. I have a solution. We can just change them after we are done and wash the old ones."

And he told me that he had scratched a scab on his knee.

"Dearest Stephan
How long are you going to be away for. Please don't be too long. I'll miss you."

No wonder he was so anxious to get home during our holiday to my father's. He had a maiden waiting for him.

"Dearest Stephan
I've got some free time on my hands so would you like to catch up again. How about. March 4? Please send back your answer quickly.
Affectionately
Cornelia"

March four. That was the day that I found out about father's losing the senate. Stephan didn't want me to run errands for him, he wanted me out of the house so that he could have this Cornelia woman over. There was a Mr Paterson on the letters that he wanted me to post. It wasn't Mr Paterson. It was Mrs. I'll bet anything that it was a 'yes' to one of their little rendezvous.

The most recent is

"My dearest Stephan
Robert will be out of the house in the sixth of March so I can easily get out of the house. Does 11am work? I can bring sheets and protection if you like. Would you be able to get your wife out of the house?
Hope to see you soon, my love.
Your darling
Cornelia."
The sixth of March. That's today. 10am. That's in 13 minutes.
After reading all the letters, there is no doubt about it.

Stephan is having an affair.
