The amazing and the terrible news

Life has been deadly dull since that day in the city.
Hannah, thank god, wasn't punished but having to clean and mend our dresses would've been punishing enough.
Penny and Eden were furious that I'd gotten myself grounded because they wanted to hear all about the city. I told them about it through letters but left out the bit about meeting John Laurens.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was our third week of being grounded and Hannah was teaching us math, "so you multiply four by x and then you multiply four by two and you add them together." I could feel my eyes unfocus and my ears switch off as I zone out of the lesson.
Ding dong
Alas! Saved by the door bell, again.
I jump up to answer and Hannah scowls at me.
"Sit down, Peggy!" She hisses. She's been very uptight since the city.
"But- the door?" I falter
"One of the servants will get it!" She glares at me and I slowly lower myself into the couch.
"Nice try," Angelica whispers.
Father strides across the hallway to open the door and I hear him thank the mail man.
At this I stand up again. What if there's a letter from John?
I've had quite a few letters from him. Recounting tales of revolution and war. It all sounds exciting but I worry for him. Even though I've only met him once in person and received eleven letters, I love him like a brother and am always wanting news on him.
I edge my way over to the living room doorway, ignoring Hannah's furious stare so that I can listen to what is being said.
"Margarita, you have a letter!" Daddy calls disapprovingly. Although daddy stands for the revolution and it's cause, he strongly disapproves of my friendship with one of the revolutionary's who "project their publicity in the streets", But there is nothing he can do about it.
I rush into the hallway and snatch the letter from daddy while Angelica and Eliza trot over to swoon over my newest letter from John. In his hand I also see an official notice by the government and an elegant looking invitation probably to a dinner party of some sort.
I rip open the envelope and sigh at the sight of John's hand writing. The others stick their heads over my shoulder and giggle.
"Dear Peggy" the letter reads,
"We've moved further south and are now" here, the words were crossed out by a mail checker who makes sure that no information is given away I case it is intercepted by the enemy. I've gotten used to it by now
"We've moved further south and are now———-. British general Howe had thirty two thousand  troops in New York harbour. They surrounded our troops and attacked. More than half of our men are dead and we only narrowly escaped. We are now out-gunned, our-manned, out-numbered and out- planned. It's not looking good for us but Washington is still confident we can win. He made Alexander his right hand man recently. Good move if you ask me. He even convinced-"
"Eeeee!" I hear a squeal from the other two and I whip my head around to see them jumping up and down and grinning ear to ear.
"What, what?" I ask.
"The Winters ball. It's next Saturday! Oh, please father can we go?!" Eliza turns to father and begs on her knees. Angelica has the elegant pale blue invitation in her hand. It sports the words
"Your presence is requested for:
The annual Winter's ball"
I squeal and turn to father who almost smiles.
"Alright, you may go. Your punishment will have been lifted by then anyway."
I run and jump into father's arms. "Thank you father!" Before retreating into the living room to continue reading my letter.
"-He even convinced Washington to give us Christmas off! The Winter's ball is coming up and since I will be in town for it, I was wondering if you wanted to go with me? It's fine if you don't or you're already going with a  rich, snobby man. Just thought I would ask anyway. Can't wait for your next letter!
Yours truly
John Laurens"
I sigh and clutch the letter to my chest. He's so brave. Of course I'll go to the ball with him!
As I lean over to teach for the ink pot and paper, I hear a strangled cry from father. I drop the ink pot which smashes on the carpet but I take no notice as I run as fast as I can in a hoop skirt over to papa. Angelica and Eliza are soothing him and patting his back while he purses his lips and his face turns red. This means one thing. Grief and loss. I've only seen father like this twice. Once when his mother died and once when mother lost her expected child.
"Daddy, what's wrong?!" I cry desperately.
He points a trembling hand towards the official declaration that lies innocently on the floor. I pick it up with shaking hands and read over it.
"By order of King George III:
Due to the lack of cooperation displayed by citizens of America, an armed battalion will be sent to fight in this War."
I crumple on the floor in a heap and Eliza, quickly drops down beside me to comfort me. The last thing these soldiers need is more men to fight. And John. God keep him safe.
Aand... that's a wrap. Hope that you guys like this chapter. Also I don't know if George III actually sent a battalion or not, just using lyrics. In regards to the Laurens + Peggy ship, I was thinking (since no one commented and sorry if you did comment or tried to but couldn't for some reason, I'm sorry) that I would make them really close friends like sibling friends but they sort of act like a couple? What do you think?
Thanks for reading!
