Flecks of pearly white shine in the inky black expanse, their faint starlight the only guide Selene had to navigate the Shadow Forest. She had taught herself how to rely on the stars at night to find her way to places. The auburn haired girl scaled a nearby tree effortlessly, and leapt from branch to branch, weaving through the forest at an almost incomprehensible speed. Only moments later, she had arrived at a cottage, framed with birch timbers and built with stone bricks. It lay on the shores of a silvery moonlit lake, overlooking the grass plains beyond it. Selene opened the door and crawled onto her soft, bouncy bed. She tucked herself under its silky covers, falling asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.
Buttery sunshine danced on her face as a soft gust of wind blew through her open window, awakening her. After treating herself to a breakfast of cheesy scrambled eggs and buttered toast, Selene headed outside to her stables to fetch her horse, Moonbeam. She was sleek and handsome, as dark as the night sky. The only light part about her was the white socks that ringed her hooves.
Selene was dressed in her usual outfit of a black hoodie patterned with a white crescent moon on its back and grey leggings. She fastened an enchanted diamond helmet on her head and quickly tied the laces on her netherite boots. A moonstone bow gilded with silver was slung across her back, along with a quiver of golden spectral arrows; an enchanted netherite sword lay in a scabbard fastened around her waist.
She packed her scarce belongings in a black backpack and exited her home, looking back longingly at her home. She was leaving for goodness knows how long, to feel the adrenaline and sense of adventure. She was going to explore outside of the Shadow Forest, something she hadn't done before. Selene whistled for her loyal pack of 50 wolves, and they came quickly, yapping and barking before halting at her feet. A black cat followed behind them, jumping into her arms along with a fluffy brown rabbit; her pets Nightfire and Fernfield. They huddled in her backpack, trying as well as they could to share the space. She zipped it up, leaving an inch of space open so that air could circulate easily. Finally, Selene was ready. She hoisted herself onto Moonbeam's back. There was no need for a saddle, as she had taught herself to ride bareback since the age of 13.
Once again, she whistled for her wolves, and took off galloping into the forest, silent but deadly.
Twilight was nearing, and Selene was searching for a hint of civilisation. She was in an oak and birch forest, and had been going nonstop for the entire day. She could tell that her wolves and Moonbeam were tired, and that Nightfire and Fernfield were restless. Thankfully, a few moments later, she caught a glimpse of blackstone walls. Slowing her pace, she trotted around its perimeter before spotting a heavily bolted gateway with a young blonde boy on guard. He looked too young for the job. His grip was tight on the blade of his sword, his expression fierce and alert.
Good. As long as he had determination and passion, Selene deemed him an appropriate guard.
She rode up towards him, startling the boy. But his face quickly morphed into an attempt at an intimidating expression and moved into an aggressive stance.
"WOMAN. WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE", he yelled loudly. Selene winced, replying hastily.
"I am merely a traveler who wishes to seek a place to stay for the night. I will no longer be any burden to you in the morning."
"Oh," he frowned, disappointment evident.
"So you're not one of his spies?" He questioned. Selene furrowed her brows, confusion lacing her face. The boy looked around, as if checking someone was there.
"Dream," he whispered.
"Have you heard of him?"
Selene shook her head vigorously. This boy obviously had something against this Dream guy, and she didn't want to get involved. He nodded cautiously, believing her.
"Alright then," he said, his demeanour now more relaxed.
"Welcome to L'manberg."
