A galaxy is collection of stars, gas, and dust held together by gravity. Galaxies vary in shape and size and also in the type of stars within them. Those with plenty of gas are rich in young blue-white stars, while galaxies lacking gas are only made of older red and yellow stars.
Naming galaxies
From the 18th century onwards, astronomers started discovering so many objects in space that most were not named, but were given simple catalogue numbers. Some have familiar names, but many are still known by these numbers. Major catalogues of deep space objects, such as stars, galaxies, and nebulae, include the Messier catalogue with 110 objects and the New General Catalogue (NGC) with 7,840 objects.
